Because you are dividing by 100.

What is 100/100? 1 which is 100.00 with the decimals moved two places 1.0000.

1.48 is being divided into a hundred peices
if it is multiplied each signigicant peice is being quantisized a hundred times, like a tree reaching out:yinyang:

I was really good at math but I'm out if practice. "using known formulas to get predictable results" the year I went to college the professor said that. That makes so much sense.

I never missed more than 1 problem on any of the tests but I wasn't going to pay 80$ to do my homework online. Highway robbery. I did go all the way to Calculus in high school with A's

well, you can think about it also in a different way.

Dividing by 100 is the same as dividing by 10, and then dividing the result by 10 again (10x10=100).
So, first you move it once, because 1.48/10 is 0.148 and then you divide it again by 10-> 0.148/10=0.0148.

This means then that: dividing by a 1 followed by X zeros, you move the decimal point X times to the left. Multiplying by a 1 followed by X zeros move the decimal point to the right. Dividing by 0.0000...1 is the same-> move the decimal point to the right, as many zeros there are (also counting with the one before the decimal point: 0.0001 is moving it 4 times). And multiplying 0.000...1 is like the first example of the multiplication.

Here's another way to think about it:

You have a fraction, 1.48/100, and you want it to be a number that's not a fraction, just a decimal. To make that happen you have to convert that fraction into some number divided by the number one (it's kind of like finding a least common denominator) because any number divided by one is just that number, even if it's a decimal. To turn 100 hundred into 1 you have to move the decimal point two places to the right, so 100.0 becomes 1.000. And since it's a fraction anything that you do to the bottom, you also have to do to the top, so 1.48 becomes 0.0148.

1.48/100 = 0.0148/1.00 = 0.0148

That's the idea behind what you're doing. I don't know if you've covered compound fractions yet, but that's basically what you're working with here. You're trying to turn a compound fraction into a simple one. Decimal numbers are really just a short hand way of writing base 10 fractions. When you move a decimal point one place to the left, you're dividing by 10, and when you move a decimal point one place to the right, you're multiplying by 10.
