The 23 Enigma
    #21412998 -

The 23 enigma refers to the belief that most incidents and events are directly connected to the number 23. Robert Anton Wilson cites William S. Burroughs as being the first person to believe in the 23 enigma. Wilson, in an article in Fortean Times, related the following story:

"I first heard of the 23 enigma from William S Burroughs, author of Naked Lunch, Nova Express, etc. According to Burroughs, he had known a certain Captain Clark, around 1960 in Tangier, who once bragged that he had been sailing 23 years without an accident. That very day, Clark’s ship had an accident that killed him and everybody else aboard. Furthermore, while Burroughs was thinking about this crude example of the irony of the gods that evening, a bulletin on the radio announced the crash of an airliner in Florida, USA. The pilot was another captain Clark and the flight was Flight 23."

Burroughs wrote a short story in 1967 titled "23 Skidoo". The term "23 skidoo" was popularized in the early 1920s and means "it's time to get [leave] while the getting is good"

I have personally come to find an interesting significance to the number 23 in my life and the events in it. Have any of you guys ever heard of this before or have any thoughts or beliefs regarding it?

I think a lot of it now is propagated through culture and what nots.

If you pay attention, the number 23 appears in A LOT of film..be it a random street sign or birthday or something, it was purposely put there by the director/producer whomever.

however, I think the 23 enigma is pointing towards a deeper reality not having anything to do with 23, but with synchronicity.

and as I post this, I remember posting this or seeing this post before, very strong feeling of deja vu.

kind of odd.

Yes indeed it does have much to do with synchronicity, the person who first turned me on to the 23 enigma mentioned that a lot. Coincidentally I am the one who turned him on to Burroughs and some where along the line I discovered how he was the one who supposedly coined the term the 23 enigma which the person who turned me onto it was not previously aware of. I cant remember how the person who told me about it initially got turned onto it himself or if I ever even asked them, making a mental note to find out soon.

I am well aware of the 23 enigma, but I personally do not riff on that too much as far as my own synchronicities.  There really seems to be no theme to mine at all, but they happen all the time.  They usually come in bunches, then there's a lull, then another bunch.  There have of course been some related to the number 23, which are certainly fun.

You know Michael Jordan's number was 23.  He won six (2x3=6) championships.

And 2/3 = .666

Some fun ones here

Okay, so having seen this thread and having said what I said I had a 23 synchronicity today.  I was at work, and someone was talking about rich people's homes and said, referring to one, that it must have cost "23 million dollars."

To top it all off, when I got home, I checked my caller ID (I have a landline) and apparently some company named "Synchrony" tried to contact me around noon.

Whaddayaknow?

Lol. If Michael Jordan had won 23 championships then maybe. Also the number 23 was a terrible movie, totally turned me off of the whole 23 thing.

I'll admit that most of those clearly aren't very compelling.  And that movie did suck.

The phenomenon of synchronicity, though, is more about the impact it has when it happens, not so much in reading about it.  You don't have to believe anything for a string of "23" synchronicities to come off, they just do.  And it's interesting to see nature behave in these totally acausal and eerily weird ways.  Whenever I've been coming off of a drug or smoking a lot of weed in the past, I'd get very many very strong ones.  I make that point to illustrate that it seems to be a very real phenomenon originating in the subconscious.  Certain frames of mind, chemical induced or not, cause them to proliferate in many people.  The 23 stuff may seem stupid, but a lot of people do have them on that theme.

I've never seen the number 23 talked about this way, but I've seen the same stuff regarding 47.

I think R.A.W is just eluding to the fact that what we believe is what we see. We project our beliefs into the world and that is what we find. Confirmation bias in other words.

A few years back my other half told me that a few years ago he started seeing 222 everywhere. Sure enough, the next day I started seeing it everywhere too. It's the same with the 111 phenomenon that a lot of people talk about.

However that's not to belittle the concept. The point that R.A.W makes is very profound when truly understood alongside other ideas he (and many others) tries to get across in his books and through Discordianism, Prinicpia Discordia etc.

So is 4/6.

OP: Imo there are common recurring patterns in mathematics as well as our susceptibility to want to believe in some over-arching meaning to the events in our life.
Voila, 23 skidoo.

This was written in 1899 and is the earliest known recording of the term 23 skidoo

For some time past there has been going the rounds of the men about town the slang phrase "Twenty-three." The meaning attached to it is to "move on," "get out," "good-bye, glad you are gone," "your move" and so on. To the initiated it is used with effect in a jocular manner.
It has only a significance to local men and is not in vogue elsewhere. Such expressions often obtain a national use, as instanced by "rats!" "cheese it," etc., which were once in use throughout the length and breadth of the land.
Such phrases originated, no one can say when. It is ventured that this expression originated with Charles Dickens in the "Tale of two Cities." Though the significance is distorted from its first use, it may be traced. The phrase "Twenty-three" is in a sentence in the close of that powerful novel. Sidney Carton, the hero of the novel, goes to the guillotine in place of Charles Darnay, the husband of the woman he loves. The time is during the French Revolution, when prisoners were guillotined by the hundred. The prisoners are beheaded according to their number. Twenty-two has gone and Sidney Carton answers to -- Twenty-three. His career is ended and he passes from view.

Racial segregation, as to how it manifests itself specifically in california penal system, has a history of numerilogical mythos. 13 is also a familiar number in this regards.

Re: The 23 Enigma [Re: Connoisseur]

Well the 23 letter of the alphabet is 'W" … i.e "white". An instance of it's significance being that when working out, particularly in groups, the number "23" is emphasized in the ritual of milatristic counting. "13" stand for the southern "mexicans", … "88" , or "HH",  …"Heil Hitler". Now while these numbers are plentiful in California prison culture due to such a specific population, they exist outside of it but of course with much less frequency per capita.
