Right on. I unfortunately sold my longboard a couple years back to get a paddle-board which is really fun as well, but in a different way.
I used to have a blast just riding long lines on that thing. 30-45 second rides are always incredible for me...it's a different style of surfing completely, really just a lot more relaxing.

I've had a friend go surfing in France a few times. He shot some videos and took pictures, and it looks absolutely beautiful at French beach-breaks. I would like to one day go there as well.

The only other countries I've surfed in is Brazil (southern coast; Florianopolis & Baha Da Tijuca-Rio); And Costa Rica twice. Both are amazing places, but Brazil by far has a better and wider variety of breaks & waves. Basically my whole family lives down there so I visit once every 1-2 years. I have some pictures I can upload later today if you're interested in seeing them.

I also had a another question for you.
Did you learn how to surf in Holland?

I wasn't aware there were many surfers there, I just looked it up on google and it seems like there's a couple decent spots. I'd imagine that it would be terribly cold in the water there, right?

Yeah I learned to surf here. I live very close to the beaches of Scheveningen

We actually get a lot of waves, but the quality is meh. No real ground but a lot of windswell

Winter is freezing. Last year wasnt too bad, neither is this year. But we had 2 degree celsius water temps a few years back. I posted a pic of me surfing in the snow in this thread. You def need a good wetsuit. This is my current winter gear:

Xcell drylock with hood 5/4
Mitts 5 mm
Boots 7mm

Post those pics man! Id love surfing south and central America. I mainly travel the European coastline

About 3 to 4 hours if the waves keep coming. If its a 10 minute wait between sets, maybe an hour one-and-a-half

Gotta keep moving to keep warm

Last week in Morocco we really brought the wrong suits. We read about needing no more than a 3/2 or even a shorty. It was really cold. My friend brought a short sleeved 3/2 and after 30 minutes he was bluefaced and shivering like mad. I brought an old 3/2 and did better (I also have more fat) but used the thermo rash-vest I was smart enough to bring for the morning sessions.

Sometimes you have to really wait for the sets on those big points and thats when you lose core temperature

I feel you on the lack of groundswell. The area of FL that I live in is mostly windswell due to the islands of the Bahamas blocking any groundswell coming in unless it's direct coming from the NE/NNE. I have to drive an hour north to get a good, clean groundswell at a beach break.

I don't know how you deal with the cold though. The coldest water temps I've ever been in were 52 degrees which is roughly 11C. I lasted in that water for only about an hour and a half before I couldn't handle it anymore. To be fair, I was only wearing a 2mm long-sleeved springsuit.

The pics I have are several years old and printed on paper. I don't have a scanner but I'll try to get them up asap when I go over to my neighbors tomorrow.

Looks very similar to here as far as usual wave size and shape. The color of the ocean is completely different though.

What's the length of the board you're riding there?

I also had a question about brands of boards. Do most people in Europe surf on American made boards? Like Al Merrick, Rusty, Lost, etc? Or do you guys mostly use local European shapers?

Thats a 9'1 Hobie PSD Surftech

We have a lot of boards like that here, but also the boards that you mention. There are some shapers but not a whole lot. The UK is probably closest for custom boards. And France but then the language thing becomes a bit bothersome

Main brands are the big ones who have global distribution networks. Lots of firewires and Haydenshapes and so on

Thanks for clearing that up for me.

I've been using a local shaper here since I was 17. His custom boards under 7 feet are only $250-$300 (depends on the fin set up) compared to the brand names starting at $450 for their worst boards.

I've had one non custom, name brand board before that I really liked riding. It was a 5'8" x 17 3/4" x 1 1/4". It was really small, but it had really good speed for a board that's so thin... This was around 12 years ago and I believe Al Merrick was shaping all the Channel Islands boards still at that time. That's why it came out so nice.

I just bought a little groveler that I'm loving. 5'6" x 20.5" x 2.4ish. It so fast and responsive. Perfect for the small wind chop that we get here 80% of the time. I was a big time skateboarder for years, so this board is great for me. It's so skatey on the water. I also got a bad ass 5'11 x 18.88 x 2.32 Lost board for christmas. It's an awesome board, but it's definitely better for the bigger punchier days, which don't happen often here.

I now have 4 boards. My gf is bitching about them because we don't have much room left haha. And I want more!! I'm a sucker for a deal on craigslist

Three weeks ago I had 5 boards. Now I am down to four usable ones

10'noserider
9'0 McTavish Original allrounder
9'1 Hobie PSD HP Longboard
6'9 Joel Tudor Diamond Tail Single Fin (busted)
6'2 Mark Richards Retro Twin Fin

Wow that is cheap! I am expecting to shell out around a €1000 for a custom board from this guy

:drooling: I wants it

The shaper I use is/was a good friend of my parents' since I was a child, so he's been making boards for me now over 10 years at cost. The name of the small company the guy runs is Nectar. If I were paying full price for his boards then yes, I'd be paying around 6-7 hundred minimum for a shortboard and around 900 to 1,000 for a longboard.

Currently I only have 2 boards, and a paddleboard.
-5'10" x 17 fish tail w/ FCS fin system for the small-medium days.
-6'3" x 17 1/2 square tail w/ Future fins for any overhead+ days

The paddleboard is just for flat days really. I just recently got it more so for exercise. I have to leave it at my friend's house that lives right on the beach because it's 12'2" and weighs a shit ton. Transporting that board anywhere is a pain in the ass.

I had an 11' paddleboard. I actually sold it because getting that behemoth to the beach was too much work. In the end I also prefer a board without a paddle for surfing.

Paddling around is nice though on flat days

On Friday nights here there's a group of around 20 paddleboarders that meet up at 11pm by the port.
They take the canals 3 miles to downtown Fort Lauderdale where all the bars/clubs are.

I joined them a couple times so far in the past 3 months and it's a great time. Just about everyone straps a cooler filled with beer to the back of their board as well as bringing a bunch of pre rolled joints along.

We go party downtown a couple hours, then paddle back home. I wish I could go more often, but I have to borrow my buddy's truck every time I want to take the board somewhere.

I remember in middle school if someone wore something like a quicksilver or billabong shirt but they didn't surf, everyone would get on their case about being a POSER!!! lol. Kids are silly.
