Snowboarding is fun, but it's not the same my friend.  Anybody make it to Oahu? Those are some intense freaking waves on the north shore! I Surfed double to triple overhead Haleiwa and it was freaking sketchy man! If the swell gets too big on the north shore, I recommend hitting up the west side of the island. I went out to Makaha, and it was pretty fun. The locals at that break can be stingy, but they don't get every wave

I saw that latest east coast swell article. Looks pretty fun! I am looking at moving to the east coast in a few years or so. Looking at North Carolina right now.

The Outer Banks is the best surf on the entire East Coast. With one possible exeption "Monster Hole" near Del ray beach Fla

The hole in Delray goes off so rarely. The swell has to come in perfectly from the East for it to build up there.

Reef Road an hour up the road might be the best break in FL, but parking doesn't exist so you gotta go there with someone that knows one of the homeowners there or get dropped off..

There's a lot of nice beach breaks up and down the coast though. Sebastian Inlet and New Smyrna are both great breaks. Even South Beach under the right conditions can be amazing for short windows of time.

I surfed out in the Keys once too. You have to boat a mile out of Key West for it to even be possible, and then whistle for a wave all day long.

That's crazy. 20 years surfing and living in FL and only heard about the offshore reefbreak in Key West from a handful of people. It's almost like a mythical place.

I've surfed reef road countless times. It's not as good as it used to be, but I would still say that it's one of, if not the best break on the east coast when the conditions are right. I was there last week for a swell that would prove that..

I always thought monster hole was the outside peak at sebastian inlet? I didn't realize that it was something in Delray as well. On big hurricane swells I've seen those outside breaks easily triple over head. Hurricane Sandy was a big one.

DMT: That's crazy you mentioned that Key West spot. I've also heard tales about it. I'd love to do that just to say I have. The keys is a pretty cool place. Definitely not known for surfing though lol.

Here's a pic that was taken at pump house (right next to reef road) during hurricane sandy:

Right on man. The swells that came in last week from the 2 cold fronts gave us some of the best waves in years by FL standards (since Hurricane Sandy from what I can remember). I tried paddling out at Juno pier first, but apparently that pier/beach break hasn't had beach access for around a year now due to beach erosion. I ended up at Ft. Pierce inlet a little while up the road and it was a constant head-high+ swell with glassy conditions until around noon. Some really fun surf.

When you mentioned the hole, Sebastian Inlet didn't even come to mind as I used to call the spots up there the jetty and 2nd light respectively. I stopped surfing at those 2 breaks a long time ago though. The local guys out there are super aggressive and territorial. Especially when there's a good swell, you'll get groups of sponsored guys that will snake you on every damn wave.

The hole in Delray Beach I was referring to is the beach break just north of the main public beach. It's called the hole because it's the only place south of "the bend" that allows swell to make it in straight from the east due to the hole between 2 Bahamian islands. I hope that made sense considering you know the geography here. It was kinda hard to phrase it.

OP, your Nicaragua thread was so awesome. I've pretty much memorized wannasurf's page about that country and hope to retire there soon.
I've surfed in Oregon and Canada for about 30 years and spent some time in Cocoa Beach in the 60's.  :cheersyoufuck:

Here's a thread I made about my favorite spot in Canada.
Google map Port Renfrew, British Columbia to see the awesome set up.

Very cool arago.

From what I hear Cocoa in the 60's was THE break to be surfing on the east coast.

It's extremely disappointing nowadays up there. They dredged so much sand since the 90's there that the waves don't have a shelf to curl over, so it's always mushy even on big swell days.

The surfing up in the PNW and SW canada looks so beautiful.  Great waves but those rocks and the really cold water scare me away from breaks like that.

KroniKo: I see what you're saying now. The original poster mentioned "Monster Hole" so it confused me. And yea, fuck the bahamas. If it weren't for the bahamas, South Florida would be pretty damn good.

Also agree that the breaks in the PNW looks so damn cool. I love that look, like it's in a lake or something. Big pine trees and cliffs. I doubt I could do that cold water though.

I really want to do a surf trip this summer. It's either Nica, Costa Rica, El Salvador, or Puerto Rico. Might have to bring my girl along, so might just do Costa Rica again. There's more activities for her there, plus it's pretty safe.

That sounds amazing brother. In my late teens I took 2 group surf trips to Costa Rica.

The first time the waves were consistently clean & glassy holding around chest-head high for the whole week (my ideal conditions). 2nd time around was quite a bit bigger, but the break I was surfing (Playa Hermosa) started closing out on every set when it got past 10 ft & winds were onshore. So I only got 3 full days of surfing in.

Unfortunately I didn't get to see the "real" Costa Rica as my group was mostly confined to the resort and touristy areas. We did take a day trip to one of the jungles which was quite fun.

I would love to go back to Central America one day again, but if I do so it would no doubt be Panama.

My friends that still travel to surf pretty frequently told me that CR's coast has become overpriced, crowded, and crime rate has gone up considerably towards tourists in the past 10-15 years.

They tell me Panama is the place to go surf as it's basically the Costa Rica of 20 years ago.

I was definitely eye balling the OBX.  I imagine every other spot in NC would be like every other fickle beach break in Orange County... Requires the right swell/conditions to turn on.

Yes and no but the waves are perfect on a west wind or the week before a hurricane Early summer is nice but mid july into late august is Meh. and early september you're better off fishing.

Yea those NC outer banks beach breaks are the most consistent as far as the East coast goes.

Up there requires pretty much the same conditions as FL for decent waves but you guys can receive a swell from any direction depending on which outer banks break you're at, so a lot more days with waves.

Here the swell can only come from the E to NE (NNE) for it to make it down.

Just returned from my trip to Morocco. Nice waves but by far the dirtiest place I have ever been. Met some nice people but most are unfriendly cheating bastards.

Also got sick and destroyed my board on some underwater rocks :facepalm3:

EVERYTHING was dirty

Sewage is basically dumped on the beach or directly into the ocean. The food was not that bad if you like tagine or couscous. Just make sure everything is cooked through and through.

Scored some really nice Anchor Point waves, but that wave is crowded.

Busted my board on the final day at Boilers

I've never heard of a big surfing scene in Morocco, but it makes sense there would be cconsidering their location.

Was it dirty compared to the US, or dirty compared to other 3rd world countries? There's a huge difference between those comparisons.

I have  a quick question for you though. Did you try any of the different hashes they have there?

My friend that went there was telling me about these little has balls that are made with hash obviously, also dried fruits and nuts.
So you just eat it like a candy and gets you high as fuck. IIRC it was called a Keef. (Not the same as kief; Trychome crystals)

Also. How were the wave conditions while there?

Apart from Europe I have only been to Asia and the Middle-East and this was def more dirty, but maybe because its very dry and dusty. I live in Holland btw.

I did not smoke any hash, because my mate was kinda scared of spending 10 years in prison. Everybody and I mean everybody sells it though. Walk a 100 meters and three guys will offer you some

Yeah the kief is famous but similar to spacecake I assume. The best quality hash can be found in the Rif mountains. I only visited along the coast. We stayed in Taghazout.

We had surf everyday but only surfed good Anchor Point for 2 days. There is a massive surfscene around the spots there.

This was the view from our balcony. The point in the distance with the palm trees is Anchor Point

Oh my bad man. I assumed you were American for some reason.

In that case if it was dirtier than certain areas of Asia and the Mid-East, it must of been really rough over there. It is Africa after all...

That's awesome you got some good days in surfing though. I would love to surf the Eastern Atlantic one day. Preferably in Portugal though as I already speak the language, and find Lisbon a really fun city to vacation in.

Portugal is pretty cool!

Friend of mine runs a surf hostel there:

This is us somewhere around Peniche. The left looks nice and hollow but actually breaks on dry rock

That was in december though.

Wow, I didn't realize how big that wave was until I noticed it compared to the surfers.

That's gotta be at least triple-overhead with a 13+ foot swell. We get waves that size here in Florida maybe once every 5 years. I personally rather surf waves smaller than double-overhead.
I find it a lot more fun as I'm getting older to just surf a really clean/glassy, small to medium swell than a really big one that's choppy like in your picture
