Which personal firewall do you recommend?

I've recently switched from W98 to XP. Now I need to get a firewall.
I used the firewall from Tiny Software with W98, however the version I have is now quite old. There seem to be many to choose from now, so,
any suggestions?

I use Norton 2003, Its damn good and always picks up all the virus's i get straight away. I suggest that one to u mate.

At work I use Black Ice...at home I use Norton...Both are pretty good, but if any half decent hacker really wants to get into your system a firewall isn't going to make much difference.

I'm not sure what is good in windoze land but i use smoothwall. It's actually a linux distro with all but firewalling/port forwarding functionality removed. If you have a spare computer (>486) it's a snap to install and not too difficult to configure. This allows you to use whatever OS you choose on any computers behind this firewall machine. I've seen the same effect achieved by running a normal distro such as Red Hat and kill all services except ipchains and such. The only drawback is having to reboot the machine in order to make changes.

I?m counting on the half decent hacker not being interested in me.
Plus, I?m already behind a university firewall, I don?t really have to worry about attacks from the internet, but from my subnet (5000 machines or so)

Interesting...I do have an old pentium that I could use. The Linux world still frightens me, though...I tried switching to Debian a year ago but never got it to run smoothly. How much do I have to know about Linux to get smoothwall to work?

Read this and decide for yourself. In my opinion: not at all. You primarily need a concept of what a network is and how it works and what you want your firewall to do. Keep in mind this isn't anywhere near a full Linux distro such as redhat, debian, suse, gentoo, etc. This is a "Firewall OS" that uses a linux kernel to work it's magic. It does one thing and does it well.

The best firewall is a hardware device between your gateway to the internet and your intranet.  The best firewall will not have an IP stack so it can not be hacked unless somebody has physical access to the device.  The best firewall will stop ALL incoming and outgoing traffic that does not go through a proxy server.  Living with the best firewall is difficult, but then security and usability are always tradeoffs.

Well, I've been hacking for years, and can tell you from experience that all the firewalls out I can get through In about 15 mins. But for the amatures who are the ones usually trying to hack you, I use 3 firewalls, 1 is built into xp, the other is built into my Router called NAT, and last my ISP's whole network for all customers has a NAT firewall built into the server. I've tried to get into my shit from a friends computer and it could not be done. But anything is possible, anything can be hacked.

Almost anything can be hacked. When I worked in a high secure area we didn't have any lines that were directly coupled to the outside. Even the power for the area went through isolation transformers. We didn't have phones in the secure area (they claimed that the emf produced by the monitor could be picked up over phone lines and the image on the monitor recreated remotely...even if the phone wasn't in use). Of course we weren't hooked up to the internet either. The place was tight... armed guards at the door, which looked like a bank vault more than a door... solid concrete walls, ceiling, and floors, etc. After the area was built, the "spooks" had to come out and inspect the site before stamping it with their seal of approval. Anybody that went into the secure area went through a ten month background check, and a two week training class... not even social engineering is going to work.

I can neither confirm nor deny that this was anywhere.

(It was for a branch of the government that no longer exists called the defence mapping agency, or DMA,... they use to make maps from spy sat photos... I believe it got merged into the DOD in the late 90's)

I meant the best software firewall. :smile: The likes of  Zonealarm etc.. are mainly designed to make people feel they need to buy the product

Thanks for the help everybody.

I settled for Black Ice 3.5 for now, mainly because of the low CPU utilization. I'll probably try smoothwall once I'm done with my exams and have more time, it sounded very promising.

If you're going with installing linux, you may as well go for OpenBSD instead. It was built from the ground up for security, and they have TONS of documentation. It takes about 30 minutes to set up a basic OpenBSD system with firewall/NAT, etc (starting with a blank hard drive and one floppy disk)...assuming you have a decent internet connection. The firewall rules are a breeze. The most intuitive setup I've seen yet. Everything you'll need to do is listed on their website under the Documentation section, check it out. (specifically the network Bridging section)

HIGHLY recommend it. Linux is great, but OpenBSD was built for this sort of thing.
