Which speakers for turntable?
    #21159524 -

I moved to a new house not too long ago, and I've not hooked my surround sound up for my turntable.  The speakers are shitty, and I don't want to deal with all the wires, and I really don't want to drill holes in my floors.  Can anyone suggest some decent 2.1 speakers?  Or some decent wireless ones?

These are my only options for connections from the turntable, so I may need an adapter of some sort depending.  I don't specialize in sound and never claimed to, haha.

I don't know a lot about this stuff but I think it's common to use a preamp on the signal coming from the turntable. As I understand it, old hi-fi systems were set up to amplify the weak signal from a turntable, but modern equipment not intended for use with a turntable is not.

If your receiver doesn't have a phono input then yes, you need a preamp. You can get pretty cheap ones from Radioshack or a record store or online. They aren't the best, but they get the job done. That hooks into your receiver and you hook speakers up to the receiver.

What turntable do you have, OP? What are you willing to spend on speakers?

That's just a phono output.  You need to power the speakers with something.

Since you're asking, a receiver will probably suffice.

What receiver doesn't have a phono input?  Plug the turntable into the receiver then the speaker wire into the receiver, done.  Check out speakers on craigslist.  You can get an awesome deal.  I bought my pair of Pioneer floor speakers for like 40 bucks from my neighbor .

Sorry, I have a receiver that works fine, but I don't want 5 speakers running across the living room.  Is there a decent wireless receiver and speakers?

Just hook up two speakers?

Lots of receivers don't have phono inputs, especially newer ones that aren't high end.

OP: Again, how much are you willing to spend? If all you want to do is not use surround then do as badchad said and only hook up two speakers for now.

They are shitty surround sound speakers.  I'd be looking to spend around 200$ on a couple of good ones to hook up to my shitty 1000 watt receiver that is probably pushing 250 watts, haha.  I'd be willing to spend more on a wireless receiver and speaker set, maybe 500$.  I can switch the turntable from phono to line-in, as well.
