How do I get rid of buzzin/interference with turntables?
    #3778478 - 02/14/05 01:45 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

I have 2 turntables and a mixer setup in my room and I can't seem to get rid of that annoying buzzing interference. The turntables are both grounded to the mixer, and there is an RCA going out to my surround sound. I can't, for the life of me, figure out what it is coming from!!

I have an old gemini mixer that would get that low buzz frequency when I had it in a rack mount. To fix it I just insulated the metal rack so the metal mixer wasnt touching it.

Try that.

Make sure your mixer is well grounded, as well. Maybe even add in another ground line to the chassis, that worked on an older mixer/phono I have.

Make shure the turntables are far enough from the speakers....if they are too close, the tips might be receiving sound from the speakers which result is called feedback and it can sound as the buzz you described.

This can be a big problem if you have a powered sub hooked up to your system. Bass feedback is really easy to have happen.

That's probably it. I took my subwoofer and put it right behind me so I could hear the bass hits better. I'll move it and see if it helps.

Yeah, you gotta remember that a well-tuned phono will have the stylus floating on the record surface, so ANY movement of the phono itself translates into a lot of movement at the end of that stylus arm. It'll bounce up and down like crazy if some lound bass notes rattle anything - causing that buzzing noise.

Definitely ground. Maybe as subtle as feed back, such as in GratefulJim's case.
It's just a matter of finding it

How would I ground it better? I have the mixer in the middle of the turntables and it's all set up on a wood coffee table.

Could Be your RCAs too. After much time and plugging them in and out the Connections can get Dirty believe it nor not. Try cleaning the RCA connections with some rubbing alcohol. Make sure your shit is turned off. It can also be your RCA cables being old and shitty; It happens!

I fixed it. I ran the RCA cables away from the mixer and turntable power cables and it has gone down a lot. I can barely hear the buzzing now.
