Opium question

I live in a midwestern state and we generally have REALLY cold winters, my question is should I plant my seeds now or wait until spring. I tried joining poppies.org a while ago but they weren't letting people sign up at the time, all I need is some quick advice, thanks...peace.

Where do the names 'turkish hens' and 'china white' come from?

The primary species is Papaver somniferam (the opium poppy) known as 'Dutch Blue' in America and in most Bar and Restaurant supply companies who sell them all over the
world.

The 2 pound tins whole sale at $8.00 U.S. per tin.

So who is giving them these nicknames?

The same kind of people that give Ps. cubensis names like "Pink buffalo" and "Koh Samui." :wink:

China White was the batch of synthesized Heroin that was spiked by the chemist, trying to speed throught the recipe.  When injected, the MPTP (rather than the synthed Heroin the addicts were seeking) turned them into veggetables and the US Govn't instituted the Analogue act.  MPTP

It's all just a name... like Smack :grin:

Nice answer gumby! Who cares where they got there nicknames, It's a plant. We got AK-47, White widow, Orange skunk, It's just fun when you get a varation in a variety that stems something new... Mutate!!

Turkish Hens should be the same as Hens and Chicks variety, probably the turkish means potency, China whiter refers to the petals of the flowers being white. Most asian poppies are the red variety, with smaller pods. Whites like, China, Persian, Turkish ect... have large pods and fewer flowers. This is not for all cases. Any kind can be cultivated differently. A technicques used in Thailand is to take the first flowers and Top the plants. More buds are sent up, yet they are smaller than than if the plant wasn't topped. But, more flowers per plant if topped. BTW< the plants are usually only planted in fall when the summers are wet and semi-tropic. In places like the Southern US. You can plant your opium poppies in October and harves them in February/March. The winters are mild enough in the Souht and summers are so wet that a winter grow season will be the only dry time of the year. Morphine content is less when the plants are too wet. They need to be in an arid climate for optimal morphine content. Thats why they are grown in the winter months in Semi/Tropic regions. Later.

Sorry to intertwine a somewhat unrelated question, but in the area of CA, where currently weather during the day is around 65-75F and at night down to 45F, when would an optimal time to plant be? AFOAF has read several grow documents, but is still very hesitant about wasting any seeds. If the season (almost December already) isn't too late, he'd love to plant them now.

Cubieman420, plant some now, some in your spring. Even your bets.
For the Aussies, it has to be Autumn...far too warm a continent and most zones in Oz are too hot. Cold zones only.

Do so in trays, transplant as clumps size of your fist every 2ft grid space or as stand alone clumps.



1/2 teaspoon of seed will deck a seed tray...



...and that will deck out a whole garden bed.



You should get approx. 50 pods per clump.



When grown out, you can see the spread -- approx. 1 foot. So that's why you space the clumps i.e. if you grid-space grow so you can get your feet through it...



...without smashing up the trunks that dia to near 2" -- don't wear boots, then you'll feel where to place your foot in a thick grown plot. Don't plant the clumps closer than 2 feet apart or it won't be as good.



They can get this height or more (pic is sideways unfortuneatly)





Watch the bees if you're scraping pods. Work from backwards (if grown in plot format) so the opium is not wiped off on your clothes & wasted.



Make sure you have quality soil full of worms. Use straw as mulch.



Grow some vegetables, that's good practice. Strain of poppy shown is "Tasmanian", they're the single reds. By far the best strain of poppy I have grown. I can't fault the boys at CSIRO.
