Hey Shroomism, what kind of motherboards are best for long term builds? Say I wanted a computer that would be running a lot of internal/external hardware that would last for a really long time?

That really depends on your budget and what you would be using it for exactly and what hardware you intend on using.. Motherboards can range from $60-500 or more..

I'd be using it for a home recording studio (lots of CPU heavy programs running simultaneously, and hardware like guitars and midi controllers connected), with price not really being an issue (though not wanting to buy the most expensive piece of hardware when cheaper ones might potentially do a better job). Next computer I have I'm willing to spend about 1500 on everything, possibly more just to keep it somewhat future proof. It would be stationary as well. Wouldn't be gaming on it.

Possible, only if I have issues loading stuff once in a while. I've never actually overclocked a computer before, I'm not even aware if my current one is able to. Thanks for the suggestions, going with an i7, I don't know whether I should get an 8 core or 4. I've heard that some software doesn't really work on the 8 cores as well as it should. Probably decide that after looking at the software I use the most.

Overclocking depends entirely on your processor, whether it's an unlocked one, and whether your motherboard can support it. Oh and also cooling, you pretty much need an aftermarket CPU cooler if you want to overclock, the stock heatsinks wont cut it to keep it cool enough. Current Intel processors will be marked with a "K" meaning they are unlocked for overclocking (i.e - i7 4790K vs 4790)
And yeah depends on the software whether it will benefit from 8 cores or not. Although it certainly won't hurt anything to have 8 cores if the software can really only use 4.
For future proofing you probably want to go with the best processor you can afford, even if the software doesn't benefit from 8 cores, it could in the future if/when they optimize it more.

Processor and motherboard are the most critical in terms of future proofing. As once your processor is outdated or not enough and you need to upgrade it, you also need to upgrade the motherboard to the same socket type.
You can generally upgrade anything else at any time.. PSU.. add-on cards.. graphics card.. hard drives.. etc. But motherboard and processor are the backbone to all that and you have to upgrade them together.. so get the best you can afford so that it will last as long as possible.

And in the case of current model boards, you have to upgrade the RAM as well, since DDR4 memory is now a thing on the latest and greatest boards (X99, which use the 2011 v3 socket CPUs). But you probably don't want to go with that, since the CPUs, motherboards, and DDR4 RAM for those right now are crazy expensive. If you get an Ivy bridge or Haswell CPU (like a 4790) then that will use DDR3 memory.

Motherboard doesn't necessarily have to be super fancy or expensive, as long as it supports everything you need without bottlenecking anything. CPU and graphics card and SSD are your top factors in terms of overall system speed and performance. Definitely get an SSD if you want the fastest performance, it makes a world of difference over a mechanical drive. But also get a mechanical drive for mass storage. Most people go with a 120/256/512GB SSD for their boot/OS drive and get 1/2/4TB mechanical drive for storing mass data and whatnot.

I feel like I should warn you about buying stuff from newegg. I've purchased 3 things, that didn't work, at different times from them because the price sounded right. The customer service was horrible and each incident took over a month to resolve and long to get my money back.

That doesn't sound like Newegg at all. I've been ordering stuff from them for years.
Granted, Amazon has better customer service. But Newegg hasn't been bad to me at all.
I'm curious what 3 things you bought that didn't work.
