Boy, they sure did hang ol' Mary Landrieu out to dry, didn't they?  I don't understand what Harry Reid was thinking, other than he wanted to help twist the knife in her ample backside.  Why have a vote if you don't have the votes to pass?  This put red state Democrats in a tight position they can't explain away to voters who are paying attention.

On a side note, I never thought I and the unions would ever agree on an issue, but this little toadstool is an exception.

The whole thing stinks to high heaven and continues to be a fricking football.  Greenies hate it because it will make energy less expensive and Democrats hate it because they get called out on their bullshit like they did on this vote.  The red state Democrats are going to get creamed over this.

It was a reference to Andrew Ryan, who created a utopia that decended into madness.
The city was founded on the idea the things such as economic growth and science should not be held back by regulation and human morality.

The reference was in reference to Patlals post about blocking economic growth.

I was saying the issue isn't as black and white as that and having the economy be your bottom line is very short sighted and in the past has never worked.

It's the only thing that does work, Sara.  That's why Democrats hate it.  It doesn't need them and can't vote.  A double whammy.

Even the threat of it has made energy cheaper.

There is no question that the Canucks are going to exploit the sands.  The only question is who is going to profit from it.  Me?  I'm not a real big fan of Chinese totalitarians.  I 'd rather see American pension funds make money than thosecommie cunts.

Good.  I hate when the US government gets to use eminent domain to seize people's land.  I could give fuck all else against the pipeline though.  A man's land is more important than Canada getting to sell more oil.  Fuck Canada and fuck Keystone XL.

HAHA, you lose...

You can't sell wht you can't transport.

BC said no the the pacific pipeline which would had led to china. Not a bad decision.

Quebec hasn't taken a decision yet but it seems like its heading towards a no because of some speicies of dolphin or some shit.

It was always supposed to go straight to Texas until Obama decided that no means no...

I have never seen so many people not want to buy oil at the same time.

:hmm:

The oil would be sold internationally from the Canadians. The pipeline doesn't vastly change oil acquisition in the United States itself, and it doesn't make it cheaper since it's being sold on the internationally regulated oil market. Beyond that, the jobs it will create are very real, however they are temporary jobs at best (until the pipeline is finished that is - they don't take much to operate after they are built. That's why they build them).

I'm not against the pipeline for any big reason, however it should be done with the environment and clean water sources in mind, and done well. To not do so would be stupid. I can see why people might have very real concerns. The way to alleviate these concerns is to require strict guidelines on it being built.

With that said, this is a politically charged issue. Neither the conservatives or democrats have anything but political brownie points to gain from taking a side on this issue. The conservatives will continue to push it in the name of jobs, and the democrats will continue to block it in the name of the environment.

The Canadian tar sands will be mined regardless of whether there is a pipeline or not (because eventually a pipeline will be built leading somewhere), so the environmental effects are a bit unfounded to me so long as the pipeline is built correctly with the utmost care. I suppose my biggest issue with this is that Democrats take up this 'environmental' issue to save face, but there are bigger environmental issues they wouldn't touch.

The conservatives might tout that it is a job creator, but it's a temporary one that will end as soon as it's done being built. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but I think the claims have been exaggerated.

The real winners here will be the Canadians (when it gets passed in a republican led senate). It's not a bad thing, because they are an economic ally and neighbor, but let's cut the bullshit.

I wonder if they would have to pay property tax on all of the land they would be using for the pipeline, if not it seems like a huge waste of space.

Good one!

He is going to get savaged in '15 because he is so dumb he believes everything his admirers say and thinks they are being too modest. He will throw off his handlers and make stupid blunders, he has already. Instead of the public supporting his vetoes, they will hate him even more. His own dems will desert him and support override time after time. He will be a laughingstock.

The pipeline will pass, the gop will get credit and dems will wander in the wilderness for a long time

“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship.” (attributed to Alexis de Tocqueville political philosopher Circa 1835)
