Using a food Dehydrator to Dry...thoughts, etc?
    #2071268 -

My cousin's dentist is thinking about using a food dehydator to faciliate the drying process. Any thoughts, or experience? Basically, the question is, could the relatively low amount of heat still degrade the psychoactive compounds? Any help or reports of experience using this method would be appreciated. thanks!

yes, theoretically it will degrade compounds with heat. However, many people have used this idea effectively with minimal potency loss. Keep it on the lowest heat setting. IMOHO get a fan, they're cheap and fast. If you want to use what you got, more power to ya. Good luck!

hmm, do a search next time, this has been covred a hundred times, like many of the other repeated questions that have been asked over and over because too many people are too fucking lazy to spend 30 seconds to do a search and ge their answers right away.

agreed. A food dehydrator is worthless for this unless it has a fan or else the fruits tens to bruise alot. Like thisone said, set it on the lowest temp and make sure the fan is on. Also make sure to wipe away any water that may condense or it can cause bruising too. Nothing is worse than seeing those beatiful fruits turn to blue mush...

My pet snake has used one with success. Everything turned out real crsipy and by the way he was slithering around I would say min. pot. loss. Since then I believe he disabled the heating circuit for just the air movement.

ar393, I did do a search...forgot to change the 'date range' though, so I only pulled up one or two things (I thought there would be more...now i realize there is). thanks for the help everyone...

I'm too stupid to understand the search, so I ask questions. Yesterday, my 2nd cousin praised his dehydrater, but he said when he got home form work today, the fan burned out. Not much life in it! He got about 72 hours out of it. POS~!

Also, to those who said something about it being worthless unless it has a fan. I'm not 100% sure, but don't they ALL have fans? Or do some work on heat alone? If that were the case, though, why wouldn't one just use the oven on low to make dried foods? I thought it was mostly about the fan moving air over the food, while it stayed warm...hhhmmm. Anyway, you all rule, so don't take anything I say too seriously.

We're off to get the famed Dessicant, now that we have a dead dehydrater.

Would someone please let me know if the 'P'ony silica gel dessicants for computers is a good enough alternative? Thanks

I use a dehydrator I got at wal mart for $40 and it works great. The temp control starts at 95 deg.so there's no potency loss and you don't have to disconect anything.

dmj, yeah, some dehydrators only have heat (and no temp control either, just a heating element and a power cord, essentially). Good point shirley...either that, or you have to live on a large pile of dessicant...

24 hours in front of a fan, 24 hours in a dessicant container, cracker dry.
