Drying- interesting food dehydrator idea
    #358360 - 07/21/01 02:49 PM (22 years, 7 months ago)

My friend made an interesting discovery when he tried to dry a small amount of mushrooms a while back. He had two food dehydrators, one with the heating element intact and one with it disconnected. We all know heat is bad for mushrooms. But mushrooms that take a long time to dry may also lose potency. The heated dehydrator dried the shrooms to cracker dry in 4 hours while the non-heated one takes over 24 hours.

The interesting thing is that there is considerably more bluing on the NON-heated mushrooms, leading me to believe they may actually be losing more potency than the heated ones.

Is bluing a good indicator of potency loss?

psilocybin starts breaking down at like 200 some odd degrees. a question called: when does psilocybin start breaking down (or something similiar) was posted a few days ago. use the search engine and find it.

I used a food dehydrator w/heat on some of my mushies as well and didn't notice any loss of potency.
I really doubt it gets hot enough to kill da psil.

If it weren't for Ben Franklin, you'd be speaking, err, English right now. Well, you know what I mean..

I think heat makes psilocybin break down faster... But I also think oxygen breaks down psilocybin. Maybe the heatless one passed so much air through the shrooms they lossed more.. I'm no expert but I do believe bluing is a sign of loss of potency. I will probably dry my shrooms in a food dehydrator set at 95*F.
