I have read a handful of posts (some in grow logs and pictures) where people question the fruiting characteristics of the Ecuador strain. Many are speculating that the spores are running on a shallow gene pool right now. I would guess the only way to correct it would be to collect a new specimen from the wild that has not been culled by the human hand, or start from one of the original old prints laying around some where. I wonder if there has been different effects on the genes of prints in the US vs. Canada vs. Europe. It does seem that the pictures of the flushes are different from each of these places (posts from Shirley vs. a Canadian grower vs. Yourself).

Isolate out 10 substrains and test for Vigor. Multispore doesn't gurantee you get the most vigorous.

I have seen no decline in my EQ, clones or new isolates. I have noticed that some of my isolates perform better during different times of the year, but this is do to temperature differences in my low tek system of fruiting. some fruit better during the summer, some during the winter.

If you need a Different EQ then you got, just Ask via PM.

Each time the primary hyphae from two spores connect to make a secondary mycelium you have a new organism. This oganism will age and become senile and impudent ie. senescence.
When you innoculate a jar with lots of spores you end up with lots of mycelia but this genetic diversity will not stop the aging process.
If it was a spore syringe you recieved then senescence is not the problem.
If the problem is not the cultivator then it sounds like prints from a bad "strain" or the spores were mistreated in some way.

I agree with puggy -- probably just a crappy strain, if you've fruited it a bunch of times. You've tried changing the substrate? If the place making the spores was growing it on only one substrate for many, many generations (many more than is required to senecse from cloning) this is likely to happen (more like selective breeding as opposed to a senescing strain.)

Honestly, there are a lot of variables that come into play here, but if you've tried it multiple times against a different strain, all coming from a multispore culture, it's likely genetics. It may also be some other envronmental variable (besides substrate) against which the strain is genetically predisposed.

Maybe time to give up that strain? At least for now....

Iam from ZA and i must say.. the pix i see on the net of shrooms... they do look diffrent..mexicana and samue... and the quantity one gets from a flush is also not the same..

my first samue print came from here. I just keep taking bits from a cake and mixing it up with new substrate. all my jars have good strong growth. a jar can be colinised in 15 to 20 days @ 78F- i do have prints for backup, i do not have a lot of time to stuff around with prints. would love to mix same strain from diffrent supplier and mix them.

The STRAIN is fine. Just Isolate a bunch of Individual dikaryons and test them in your growing conditions to find the winner for you.

Cottony/Rhizo doesn't mean much. The more Strains you see the more you will realize that. Some Strains even express both at the same time. My B+ is 3/4 rhizo and 1/4 cottony EVER TIME. It literally has a cottony Tail.

The substrain responsible for the spores could have been bad as stated . But I know the STRAIN is good. Reinvigoration at the OMC is going back to an older print.

I have also read in this document that myc that survived deep freezing grew much more vigorously than before.

I would say that would probably work great for a cloned isolate, if the environmental stress is a problematic factor when growing it. Spores would take a lot of generations, however, to actually mutate their genetics.

Sorry -- a cloned mycelium (mycelium that was cloned, or in other words, the mycelium was actually grown on other substrates or media,) as opposed to taking a spore print.

You would be selecting for substrains that grow best in the environmnet you subject them too.

Cubensis probably has a low temp limit, so growing close to it, generation after generation, you are bound to increase it slightly.
