Thought i'd show off my new pets [of the cactacious variety] for all to see. Trichocereus grandiflorous: 1.) in descent lighting [i had to phisicaly hold the lamp over them]: 2.) and here's another in not so good light [i'm taht shady mug in the BG ]: sorry for the poor guality pictures, i too them with my new webcam and the focus isn't great. these little guys where found at walmart [edit: wait, it was target] for under $3 [u.s.] each. the smaller one has 6 pups. i plan to cut and graft the pups [apart from the three that are moving to england, heh]

unfortunately, they are both extremely root-bound. i'm going to break up the root ball and repot into 8" dia. by 6" high clay pots.

there's a little controversy on the magic in those, it was supposed to contain DMT but that might have been because of contamed lab equipment when analyzing... they're beautiful anyways! and perhaps even good grafting stocks. i have one, probably red flowered (can't wait to see it bloom but i don't think i will this year nor next)...

anyone having the dedication to prepare several of those is a damned zen master anyway .
i just like them for my collection. they have a happy feel about them, almost as much as a T. pachanoi.

ok, a question for naybody who may have experience in this area:
i have been thinking about sealing the sites from wich the pupps are to be cut with grafting putty for protection agains the introduction of rot, as i will have to let them recover inside if i take the cuttings this season. has anybody tried this? any comments?

Yes, I picked up a Grandaflorus and a couple small Pedros, and a Cristate, and a big something or other all from Home Depot. They ain't so bad. All their plants come from Kactus Korral, but don't bother checking that website as they don't tell which species of cactus that they sell.

i got two new pachanoi for grafting stock. a 29 and a 26" cutting for $10 each will be cut into two sections each, rooted and the tip cuttings will be used as stock for the parent cacti. i am hoping the smaller grandifloroa will continue to pup so easily.
i'll try to get a picture of the pachanoi for some eye candy to make this shamles resurection of my thread worthwhile .

I once had bought a five foot cutrting at a shop here in Seattle int he middle 1970s. I laid it over my shoulder and went to walkout the door and it snapped in half.
mj
Still they are cool cactus'. Once saw an interview with George C. Scott and he had one with several branches in the living room of his home and several had cuttings cut off and no other plants were visable. So maybe he indulges int he plant every now and then.

that sounds likely enough; though, many cactus growers i've met prefer these because of the speed and ease of cultivation. i'd like to take a couple of the more expensive potted specimens of of my cvactus guy's hands, because he makes more from them than from the cuttings. i think $45-55 is still a good price for a 3-4' potted pedro with 8-12 pups all well developed and of good diameter. i made several cuttings of these in the picture. two 10" middle cuttings, a 12" tip cutting [to be used as grafting stock] and an 18" tip cutting [to go in wide a 10gal pot once a root base is well established]
