sand from the pet store
    #14680133 -

Will pet store sand work well with cactus mix? Reason i ask is because all i can find is beach sand @ lowes and play sand elsewhere. I dont wanna use beach sand cause im afraid it may have salt. Was thinking pet sand may work well.

Here i was looking @ t-rex granite gulch hard sand and the next is Desert White Repti- Sand.. says all natural, but not sure if its true desert sand. What do u guys think? Any suggestions?

Lowes will have paving sand out near the patio bricks, that's "sharp sand".

Is the reptile sand calcium carbonate? Crushed oyster shell?

na i dont think so.  I saw some that said calcium carbonate, but i passed those up. As far as i can tell the reptile sand may have been collected from a desert. The Repti-Sand says all natural. The costumer service didnt wanna say where it was from, just that its been washed and is pure.. its also really, really fine. Mainly aiming to find sand that wont have salt in it.

I didnt see any sharp sand @ lowes. They were supposed to have Mosser Lee Desert Sand, but instead there was beach sand that didnt have any info on it.  There was some sorta clumped up red sand in large white bags by the patio section, but it seemed poor quality.  I supposed i should take a 2nd look for this "sharp sand".  Maybe @ home depot

Paver sand. It's in 0.5cuft bags, near the patio stones.

Yep. They also have the big bags of perlite and vermiculite, swing by Bay 50 while you are in the garden section.

Doc, do you use a sieve to filter out all the small particles, or do you use it as is?

I think you're supposed to wash it? Somebody more knowledgeable than me will answer, I'm sure.

Try looking in the concrete/cement isle, the hardware stores here have Quikrete all-purpose sand  or washed plaster sand, both are washed and suitable for use with plants.

Gzaajhom, I always wash my sand, be it from the store or the ground.  The one exception is if the bag says "pre-washed" on it.  Even then it pays to examine the sand just to make sure it's nice and clean.
