Stephen King says he believes in God and that if you don't, you're missing out
    #20624682 -

“I choose to believe [in God]. … I mean, there’s no downside to that. If you say, ‘Well, OK, I don’t believe in God. There’s no evidence of God,’ then you’re

missing the stars in the sky and you’re missing the sunrises and sunsets and you’re missing the fact that bees pollinate all these crops and keep us alive

and the way that everything seems to work together. Everything is sort of built in a way that to me suggests intelligent design. But, at the same time,

there’s a lot of things in life where you say to yourself, ‘Well, if this is God’s plan, it’s very peculiar,’ and you have to wonder about that guy’s

personality — the big guy’s personality. And the thing is — I may have told you last time that I believe in God — what I’m saying now is I choose to believe

in God, but I have serious doubts and I refuse to be pinned down to something that I said 10 or 12 years ago. I’m totally inconsistent.”

duh, you dumb atheists. wake up.

Unless Stephen King can provide evidence of his "God" he is talking out of his ass.

Look, no single thing inside of this universe is going to prove or disprove the existence of something outside of the immediately measurable phenomenon.

You can just as easily reason god into existence as out.

How can you tell me anyone has proven anything when you can't prove what real is in the first place? I live in a maybe world, and I would not advise otherwise.

God is such an anthropocentric idea. People are born with parents, they go to school with teachers, they go to work for bosses, all under the gaze of politicians. People become certain that every aspect of their life must be guided and overseen, they project the hierarchical structures of human relationships onto the universe itself. Claiming some sentient force created the universe is like trying to accuse a rock of jealousy, or thanking a waterfall for the good it does the community. You can't relate to the icy void, so give it a name, paint it up like person, create it's persona in "our own image". It's all very transparent.

I believe in God in a sense but I certainly don't identify with your description. most religion does this and it's nonsensical.

empirical evidence is all that i need, and the only kind that could ever be substantial enough for such esoteric wonderings as God.
Talking out of his "ass", good sir, would be a neat trick indeed.

I've always thought Stephen King was hip to the Big Man in the Sky after reading the Dark Tower series and a few other of his novels... he has a way of writing about things that uses omens and signs, predictions and all the while holds things dear and precious, like we're all on some epic quest no matter how adventurous our life seems.

I have always felt like there is more validity to the anonymous, impersonal god, then there is to the father-type god. For example, Melek-Taus, who created the physical universe by laying an egg. Or azathoth, who blindly vomits forth the matter that forms the universe with no understanding of its significance. These stories are more valid because they are more accurate metaphors for nature. Nature is not here for us, we are unintended byproducts of it, where as anthropocentric religions make the opposite claim, all the universe exists just for our benefit. That is spurious claim that should garner the suspicion of any reasonable person.

Yeah, God... okay.

I'm not asleep as an Atheist, I don't have to wake up to anything. I see no reason to believe in a so called God, been there, done that, didn't work for me. Some people's lives give them no reason to believe... I personally don't see one.

I also like Stephen King, some of his work like the dead zone, Needful things, and the eyes of the dragon, are actually pretty high-concept.

Stephen King is probably just trying to get one last novel in before he croaks.

Who care what he believes in. Your the one that counts. It up to you to decide.

This is the only type of assertion any man can make on the subject.
Religious inclination is a highly subjective component of each human's interpretation of perceived reality.
One man will tell you there is a heaven and hell - realms separate from the mundane, another that there is nothing but the immediate.

Neither can be proven.

If pressed to expound personal beliefs, I see the entire universe as god, and accepting the divine nature of myself as part of all brought about changes that could not have been nurtured in my life in any other perceivable way.
Yet I have seen the lives of others changed just as positively by strong shifts in the opposite direction.
I heard once that the Buddha would speak in extremes to pull against strong thought in the other direction.

Whatever a man sees of the world is his reality, and it is right to his experience so far as honesty with one's self may be maintained.
Who are we to judge which stories are more valid for the growth of another?

Science is a religion, denotatively.
Fundamentalism in any religion is a slippery slope

The only honest approach to religion is to peruse it as a collection of diverse philosophical thoughts.
It's a book club, and everyone reads at a different speed.

There is no one answer as there is no one question.

His views on God don't matter. I think even he would agree with that, because overall, he's a pretty down-to-earth dude.

But he is a writer. An excellent writer with a knack for realistic characters and extensive knowledge of New England. But just a writer. He clearly doesn't understand how evolution works on a global scale, in the grand scheme of life as a whole, or he wouldn't be saying that "the way that everything seems to work together." is evidence of God.

Stephen King is a fantasy writer, and he should taken at that level. When I was a senior in college my girlfriend's father was an English professor who was very religious. Every semester he taught two courses: John Milton's Paradise Lost and Fantasy Literature.

Atheists and agnostics also see significance in the stars in the sky, sunrises and sunsets and bees pollinating flowers. I personally sometimes add women and children to the list, but women generally attain this status of wonder to me only in the early stages of a relationship. I am also reminded of a David Bowie song title "Teenaged Wildlife".

Thomas Jefferson specifically referred to "God and Nature's God" to address both audiences.

Stephen King and other people become religious as they get older. I view this as hedging their bets, but it's not my place to understand other people's motives.

The fact that neither religious believers nor atheistic scientists can prove their point has no bearing on science. Science only deals with testable theories, and dead men tell no tales. Scientists, when they are acting within the framework of the scientific method, don't even talk about things being "proven". Theories are accepted when the evidence favoring them becomes overwhelming and the evidence for competing explanations is unsupported. Since Karl Popper in the 1930's it is accepted that a testable theory is scientific and a non-testable theory is not scientific.
