Your favorite Stephen King novel?
    #1379882 - 03/16/03 04:11 AM (21 years, 18 days ago)

In light of the atypical pneumonia lurking around the planet now I've decided to reread my favorite King novel "The Stand". It's super long but good all the way through with an excellent ending. I've read it 3 times before but I always get something new from it each time. "It" was really good but the ending to me was weak. Which one of his books would you recommend as his best?

I would rank "Pet Semetary" second on my list, very disturbing with a great finish, it gave me nightmares for 3 or 4 nights in a row. I have to admit I haven't read "The Dark Tower" series but judging by the responses I'm gonna pick 'em up sometime this week.

If you all liked the Dark Tower series, read those and then read Hearts in Atlantis. There's a bit of a correlation, although Hearts, to me, is unlike any other King book I've read. Its one of my favorites.

"The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon" is about a little girl who gets lost in the woods, it's quite short. And by far my favorite.

Don't like his "horror" stuff much at all... IMO if you've read one or two you've read 'em all.  The Dark Tower series is excellent though, if only he would finish it

I've read quite a few and my favorite has always been 'The Shining'. I've read it three times.

I love the Dark Tower series. Havn't thought about old Roland in a while. I didn't like 'The Drawing of the Three' though.

Tommyknockers, tommyknockers knocking at my door...

I've never read that book. I just think of the little rhyme when I hear the title... (cause of the movie... obviously)

I have to say I have never read any of the books, but I have seen just about all the movies.
Rose Red was the best movie... followed perhaps by Storm of the Century or the Shining.

Stand by me was great too... but it seems we are only speaking of the horror movies here, so I guess...
I guesss....
I'm done.

dark tower series

for short ones, try:
firestarter
the bachman books (except 'roadwork', it's not so hot)
misery

for epics:
it
the stand

hearts in atlantis was amazing, as a whole. i didn't include it though because i've only read it once, and i like to reread the works of mr king.

the only king book i finished and thoroughly didn't like was "christine"....
there are others, like the aforementioned "roadwork" that didn't impress me all that much, but "christine" is the only one i actually dislike.

i still need to get around to reading the ones he did with staub or whatever his name is.

His best? Hard to name just one, but I am surprised no one has mentioned The Dead Zone yet.

His worst? That's easy -- Christine.

Hearts in Atlantis was great, but his novellas are under-rated. If you haven't yet read "Different Seasons", grab it right away -- it's a collection of four novellas. The first three are superb. The last one is lame.

The first one was made into a movie called "The Shawshank Redemption". The third was made into a movie called "Stand by me". The second (called "Apt Pupil") was supposed to have been made into a movie, but I don't know if it has been released yet.

Stephen King is one of the greatest STORY-TELLERS of our time. Is it great literature? Nope. But I'd rather read a good Stephen King than anything by Pynchon or Joyce. No contest.

yes, apt pupil was released. i never saw it, i've seen too many bad movie versions of king stories.

you can probably find it at the video store under "horror".

as for "Stephen King is one of the greatest STORY-TELLERS of our time. Is it great literature? Nope. But I'd rather read a good Stephen King than anything by Pynchon or Joyce. No contest.",
very very well said.

The Stand
It
Pet Cemetary
Skeleton Crew
Shining
Salems Lot
Needful Things
The whole Gunslinger series (1-4)

I'm going to see Dreamcatcher this weekend to see how it compares to the book. I really liked the book, and the movie version looks pretty interesting. At least it's got Morgan Freeman in it. I have almost all of King/Bachman's books minus a few. I have yet to read "From a buick 8". I have it, I just haven't had the time.

Captain Jack writes:

Yeah, there have been some stinkers (like The Shining... Kubrick's worst ever film in my opinion) but some have been great. Carrie, Stand by Me (GREAT movie), The Shawshank Redemption, The Dead Zone, Misery, Dolores Claiborne, Cujo, Hearts in Atlantis -- I am stuck in a third world country with almost no movie theaters nearby so there are undoubtedly other good ones I have missed. I think that on the whole, there are probably more GOOD King movies than bad ones.

I haven't seen the miniseries they made of The Stand. Was it any good? The book was wonderful.

I thought The Stand mini series was quite good. I ended up picking it up on DVD. I thought it was very well made. There were some great actors in that too. Matt Frewer as Trashcan man was excellent
