Growth on bridgesii (mold?)

So I potted a couple bridgesii about a month ago. They've been sitting under the shaded area of my porch until yesterday when I moved them in to the sun. Anyways, there are little white splotches all over them and a very few brown ones. My friend says it's mold and that surgery is only necessary if it gets about the size of a quarter. Just want to confirm if that's the case, and I can I avoid it spreading

Mould is not grounds for surgery as it usually grows on the outside and is never terminal. If it's rot then you might consider it.

Pictures will help like mentioned.

Okay I'll see if I can snag some soon. IV always had problems uploading on this site. In the mean time does someone have a pic of rot so I can distinguish?

From the ones I saw on Google it doesn't look the same. Mine are superficial growths whereas the google images look like a darkening/softening of the skin itself. Also I didn't water them until yesterday

Sorry it took so long and sorry for the crap quality. This first one is what i'm talking about. It seems purely superficial as far as i know, but i'm very new to growing things of any kind.



Now this one looks like it might actually be rot in my noob opinion. This is the result of my OCD picking out some of the flakes like those in the above pictures. Just so happens it's the first time i watered them as well as the first cold spell of the year and they were a little dew covered when i found them this morning :facepalm: I pulled them inside and placed them by a window. IDK if it'll get enough light but it's the best i got. Should i lop that top off or will that heal with lack of air moisture?

I'd be more worried about the skinny tip growth. That thing either needs much more light (gradually introduced to it so it doesn't burn), or it needs to be properly dormant while indoors. What are the growing conditions like?

I'm actually not all worried about the skinny growth tip. My friend ordered these cacti while i was out of town so it sat in a box for over a month trying to grow without much if any light. Since placing it outside it has started filling in it's color and growing thicker pretty quickly. I guess i'd be a little worried about it's stability as it get's bigger, but i'd assume the genetics are decent since it was the only one experiencing noticeable growth spurts while sitting in the box (i wasn't the only one who neglected picking them up for a long time :lol:) If you can see it well, it is pinched in right below the tip and the tip is getting wider and is much more green and "full" than that region right under neath.

Ah I see. The scarring is probably just from being bruised, battered, and poked by it's fellow cacti while being handled and shipped.

Well honestly I don't recall it having all that much when I picked it up and in any case I has a lot more including some on the tip which new growth. My friend says his are covered in it and it's pretty unavoidable but if like second opinions. Especially on the tip as that black stuff is really recent and I'm afraid may be due to a change in weather.

Anyways I forgot to answer questions on growing conditions. Basically I had these guys under the covered area of my porch while they were growing roots. Not any real direct sunlight as our yard is full of trees. The last couple days I set them out on the table in the uncovered region where the light hits directly between a gap in the trees for at least a couple hours most days and watered them for the first time. I think I recall hearing rain one night and it was a little chilly/dewy this morning so I brought them in and places them by a window facing the same side. Not as much light hits that window directly though.

For the record I live in the south US

Yeah your cactus is fine. Dunno what latitude you're at but as long as the temps never drops below 28f you can keep it outside all year. As to what happened to your cactus, I have before and after pics In this thread.

We certainly get below 28f at points but not at the moment. Do I not have to worry about air moisture. Got all fucking OCD again and sliced out the black on the tips :facepalm: I just need to have some faith and leave these things alone

if it's only occasional you can simply bring them inside on cold nights. Where I live it drops down to single digits and sometimes stays at below freezing temps for long periods of time, so mine live inside during the winter.

It depends on how much. Really high humidity will inhibit healing since opportunistic infections like high humidity too, but unless it's raining daily you should be fine.

You can cauterize where you cut it with a hot butter knife or spoon, but only if it's REALLY humid. I only cauterize when a caterpillar munches on it or something like that. Don't get it too hot or you'll cause deeper tissue necrosis. Just get it hot enough to make it sizzle and then have the wound facing in direct sunlight. It will scar over pretty quickly, but let me reiterate, if it isn't raining and you can keep the soil dry you don't necessarily need to cauterize it.

Never water or get your cactus wet while it has open wounds. If the weather is uncooperative, bring it inside and put it in a south facing window.

Okay so the spots I cut are now turning dark in the exposed area. Looks a lot like rot now unless that's part of the healing process but it looks soft. Don't know if I should just lop the bud off and if I do don't know if I should cauderize the top as I doubt it would grow like that

Just keep it dry and in the light for now and post a pic. Surgery is a last resort.
