Do the all electric cars come with manual transmissions? It seems like with a hybrid that isn't really an option because the car determines how that shit must be done.

I know of at least one manual-equipped hybrid, the Honda CR-Z, though I'm not sure how successful it is either at sportyness or economy.

In my truck I used to drive, the only time I'd use 1st was starting from a stop on an upward hill.
Also, better in snow starting off in 2nd (and just owning a manual transmission vehicle is easier in snow).

I'm gonna head out for some more practice now and try starting in 2nd to see/feel/hear what happens. Gonna try some downshifting too instead of using the brakes. I'll report back shortly.

You still need the breaks, fyi...
Downshifting is for when the speed limit drops or something.
I wouldn't try downshifting coming towards a stoplight just yet.

Phew! Shit is fun man. I almost got the 1st gear starting down to a science. I tried 2nd gear starting but it rumbles a lot when doing that from a completely stopped position (idle?) So I don't think I'll be doing much more of that, the down shifting is pretty tough, going 20mph there is a very noticeable "jerk" when going from 2nd to 1st but I found I could combat that by releasing the clutch a lot slower (almost like a reverse brake pedal, if that makes sense.) You guys really helped me out greatly I appreciate that, thank you.

p.s. Going in reverse is unbelievably stressful and turned out to be a jarring experience. I somehow forget what pedal is being pressed or not pressed between the clutch and the brakes. As many have said though practice makes perfect.

in defence of automatics - im a sales rep and recently got my first automatic, shit is gold ...
i do mad miles though, like literally, gas consumption is stellar on this new car hell yeah !

If downshifting, remember to rev match, e.g.: give the engine some gas before letting out the clutch. If you're letting the clutch up where the RPM of the engine and tranny input shaft are more than a few hundred RPM apart, you're doin' it wrong, and you'll feel that as a lurch or jump in engine speed.  It's relatively hard on your drive train. This is trickier when downshifting, especially if decelerating. Don't worry about it much, though, mastering this is mostly a reflexive thing that comes with experience.

Ah, see I read somewhere online that using the brakes to stop instead of downshifting is particularly bad and causes wear and tear. So what you guys are saying is; I can just depress the clutch and then brake regularly, like how an automatic brakes, and not have to worry about messing anything up..?

Yes. Exactly.

If I know I will be coming to a complete stop, I press the clutch in, put it in neutral, and then coast and brake to my stop. No need to hold the clutch in the whole time. Same with when you're sitting at a stop. Neutral, then clutch/1st when it's time to go.

Yes and no there is a happy medium. You can start to brake without touching the clutch but after that you either downshift or push the clutch all the way in and going to neutral.
Remember folks Op is driving a 6000 lb truck not a 2500 lb honda so yes braking from neutral is going to put a lot of wear on the brakes.

Yeah, when you slow down just stay in the the gear you're in until you're going to slow for it, then brake with the clutch in if you don't anticipate stopping.

When I drove stick  I was taught to never bother downshifting because break pads are cheaper to replace over time compared to clutches. Then again I was driving an integra, not sure about trucks.

Exactly, I though I was clever for about the first year or two I had my first stick shift(car I still have) and I was always downshifting to at least 3rd and even 2nd to slow down. Then when my clutch failed utterly after a couple years of that I didn't feel so clever any more. Now I usually only downshift to bleed off speed when I'm coming off the freeway and only down to fourth usually then it's neutral and brakes from there.

He said a Ford Ranger... So it'll be a lot closer to 2500 lbs... Plus, that's why brake pads and calipers are made different sizes..
