Advice for driving a manual transmission.

I just got a truck yesterday (2004 Ford Ranger) and I'm learning how to drive with a stick shift, I seem to be fine once I get going about 20-40 mph or higher but slowing down, braking to a complete stop, and getting into first gear from a stopped position is driving me insane and I know it's gotta be hell on the gears/brakes/engine.

Figured I'd sslap a quick post up and see if anybody could share some useful tips and tricks.

take it to a parking lot and slowly feel your clutch.
let it out real slow abd feel when it starts to catch.

remember, when in doubt push in the clutch.
don't be afraid of hills.


does it have brake assist?

That was a problem when I was learning to drive a stick too. The trick is to give it gas as you release the clutch. You'll get it with a little practice.

Not sure what brake assist is, is that like downshifting to slow down?

If so, yeah it does have that.

So feed it a little gas as I'm letting off the clutch slowly to lock into 1st and get moving, it seems like it takes awhile especially letting off the clutch so slowly.

I'm getting into situations where I'm pretty much slowly coasting for a good 5-10 seconds as I creep around a corner after a stop sign. Not a good feeling when someone is behind you. :frown:

It all comes from practice man you gotta know how to "float" that clutch out and time your throttle foot at the same time. This is not good for the clutch but doing it like 10 times or so till you get it wont hurt much.:manofapproval:

Another quick question that has been puzzling me; if I am approaching a stop sign and need to brake to slow down, should I be holding in the clutch before I start pressing on the brake?

Put it in neutral until you're ready to to go again (when you know you have a complete stop coming)

I'm not sure if your truck has an engine tachometer or not, but assuming it does, learn where its engine-warm idle point is. There are lots of ways that you can brake, depending on the situation. You can engine brake, if there's enough torque when you let up the gas. You can pedal brake on top of this, sort of dual braking. Or your can drop the clutch and only pedal brake. You should certainly do this when your RPM drops below that idle RPM mentioned earlier, you generally never want to brake an in-gear engine much below that point.

You'll learn the gearing after a bit, too...(when you have to slow down, but not stop, you'll learn what gear to put it in when its time to get going again.
Typically its 0-10/15 in 1st
10/15-20 2nd
20 to 27 3rd
28 to 40/45 4th
and 5 for the rest...
but that depends on the car, but your truck's gearing should be close to that..at least, mine was

also, listen to the motor and use the tach

All great advice here and many things I just flat out did not know about, thanks a bunch everyone.

I'm just gonna keep at it and try to find what seems to be a sweet spot within the clutch to get me going and will definitely start holding the clutch in before I ever press on the brake again.

I've also heard that "downshifting" is the healthiest way to slow down for the truck. Meaning if I'm going, say, 35 in 4th gear and need to slow down to about 20-25 I can simply press the clutch, change from 4th to 3rd, and slow down to the appropriate speed without ever having to touch the brake pedal? Anyone have experience with this maneuver in particular and what to watch out for when practicing it?

First gear is only for starting to move from a complete stop. There's almost no case where you will be in first for more than a second or two.

brake assist is new. it's when you press the clutch and brake in together on a hill.
the brake stays depressed while the clutch is in still.
it's to help against roll backs.

once you start going you can release the clutch.
especially in first and second.
you should be able to hammer thru those gears.

First gear almost seems to do nothing except rev the engine, I almost feel like starting in 2nd gear because it has a tighter pull but I haven't experimented with this yet out of fear of destroying the gears.

Does anyone know what would happen if I "skipped" a gear? Especially starting from a complete stop or otherwise (shifting from 2nd to 4th for example or even downshifting from 4th to 2nd)

What you're describing is sometimes called "skip shifting," and you can do it if you are mindful of your redline. I sometimes do that when accellerating under boost only to find myself at high RPM, max useful torque, and the speed limit. :smile: Then I just drop it into the right gear for cruising RPM.

I've never driven a truck, but skipping a gear is how you usually do it, especially if you're going from a small road to a high speed highway or something. Saves gas too. Do the same when you're slowing down, switch to a lower gear and let the engine slow the car down rather than using the breaks.

In my truck I used to drive, the only time I'd use 1st was starting from a stop on an upward hill.
Also, better in snow starting off in 2nd (and just owning a manual transmission vehicle is easier in snow).

Just fuck with it.
I promise, in 2 weeks you'll be smoking a cig, talking on the phone, and maxing a burger and driving that bitch.

Seriously.. It'll be 2nd nature in  no time and you'll hate driving automatics soon enough (boring)

Yes. Seems odd to us country boys here in the states also, the ones who learned to drive in the farm truck. I feel so out of place when I drive my wife's car, and I search for a non-existent clutch when coming to a stop.
