Don't worry, nobody here has Hypsizygus ulmarius. What circulates as H.u. is nothing but an oyster. Now we know how that could happen. :grin:

From all mushroom species I got through trades, every third or fourth was something else...

damn it, thanks for posting, I got an "sra" culture from a contest last winter and I put it on sawdust and cased it with soil and set it out side, It looked like my chickens had knocked it over and what was fruiting  was thick and growing parallel rows of really thick poly pore looking Pins, and HUGE. Somehow I knew that an SRA that was growing that fast could not be the SRA that I am familiar with.

I am leaving town but when I get back I am going to post some pics here of what ever the finished product is. Hope it is something useful. :laugh2:

Ok so I checked last night and I realized what it was, Trametes versicolor. I grows in the petri just like the trametes strain I have isolated fro the wild. It is HUGE. Going to call this one the monster trametes.. :facepalm:

Yeah, I was wondering about that. A mushroom that is described in field guides as Hypsizygus ulmarius looks nothing like the one being sold and cultivated. And it's not only Shroomery, even reputable vendors sell 'elm oyster' under the latin name H. ulmarius.  If nothing else, the gills in 'elm oyster' always descend on the stipe, while on the real H. ulmarius they never do. So that means it cannot just be a strain, but a different species. I tried to raise the subject in several 'elm oyster' cultivation and ID threads, but no one really knows how the confusion started.

@mycoelf - thanks for confirming, means we most likely have the same culture. Funny thing is, I've spent a lot of time looking for T. versicolor culture, never knowing I already had it! :lol:

Exactly. Not to mention the typical oyster smell of its mycelium, while mycelium from the genus Hypsizygus smells completely different. Then there is the typical aniseed or liquorice smell of the fruitbodies, as well as RRs allergy against spores from this one and other Pleurotus species.

For me it is either Pleurotus ostreatus or P. pulmonarius. Perhaps P.o. var Florida?

The confusion must have started in the 90s, when Paul Stamets and Rush Wayne got samples from the Canadian Department of Agriculture.

So I've got two different cultures of "Stropharia rugosoannulata".  Neither one of them are rhizomorphic at all.  They look kind of like coprinus comatus.  White and fluffy and fast growing.  Is that a good indication that neither of my plates are really SRA?  I bought the second culture from a sponsor site but it was super fast and not rhizomorphic at all.

Unfortunately it seems that you have the same Trametes cultures going around.
It's a damn shame that even the sponsors are selling unproven cultures.  :nonono:

Is this still the case with sra strains? I have two i personally cloned and one i got recently that is super fast and oozes a lot of yellow exude very quickly.

i got a good fruiting SRA in a trade a while back, so at least not in my experience.

Mmm i have three: two local clones and one through a trade that is super fast and exudes a lot if yellow stuff even on agar. Reported to be from Out-grow
