dread·locks
ˈdredˌläks/Submit

Hehehe

Ok here is the wiki just to prove one of my points. I am not trying to debate you about what various people choose to call their locks. But I will state your arabic definition of dread is one reason Rastas dont use the term dread. Fear my hair?

So with that said here is the wiki proving(kinda as it is wiki) that the words are interchangeable.

Quote:
Dreadlocks, also called locks, dreads, or Jata (Hindi), are matted coils of hair. Most dreadlocks are usually intentionally formed; because of the variety of different hair textures, various methods are used to encourage the formation of locks such as backcombing. Additionally, leaving long hair to its own devices by not brushing or cutting the hair will encourage it to tangle together as it grows, leading to twisted, matted ropes of hair known as dreadlocks. The latter method is typically referred to as the neglect, natural, organic, or freeform method. A common misconception is that those who have dreadlocks do not wash their hair, but this is usually not the case. Many dreadlock care regimens require the wearer to wash their hair up to twice a week.[1]

Dreadlocks are associated most closely with the Rastafari movement, but people from many ethnic groups have worn dreadlocks, including many ancient Hamitic people of North Africa and East Africa (notably the Oromo of Ethiopia, and the Maasai of northern Kenya); Semitic people of West Asia; Indo-European people of Europe and South Asia (notably the ancient Spartan warriors of Greece, and the Sadhus of India and Nepal); Turkic people of Anatolia and Central Asia; the Sufi Rafaees; and the Sufi malangs and fakirs of Pakistan. Some Neanderthals and Cro-Magnon were also known to have worn locks, as is portrayed in paleolithic cave art in Europe, perhaps for spiritual reasons.

Lol what point did that prove again?

"fear my hair"
no no no

The name dreadlocks comes from growing up in constant fear in the slums/ghettos of jamaica. Being the lowest of the low in fear of being raped, robbed, or killed at any moment.
Most of the roots reggae musicians (who brought the hairstyle and word dreadlocks to the rest of the world) grew up in extreme poverty in these ghettos. And from what i understand the dreads are more a sign of strength. As in "i grew up in shit and rose above it, i didnt stoop to the level of those around me"

I think you just have a problem with "dirty festival kids" and have had no real interactions with actual rastafarians. Just a guess.

Bae is definitely the worst since yolo.

I'll add "boof". Biscuits fans be boofin mahldog and smokin deemsters at shows. In fact I'll go ahead and add "deemsters" to the list while I'm at it. That's by far the worst word for DMT I can imagine.

I like your etymology but your assumption is incorrect.

The point that the wiki link proved is that the words are interchangeable where as you stated that locks is more of a slang term.

People lock their hair for many reasons, you gave an example of one sub-group, as did I. I am not arguing with you so please don't interpret my posts as argumentative. Also try and debate without ad hominem and making baseless assumptions about me.

Oh sorry i assumed we we discussing the origins from Jamaica, and not just the word in general. Your earlier post saying something to the extent of "see what an actual rasta calls them" led me to this assumption. But yes people do lock their hair for a number of reasons, no debate about that.

Just a quick question, do you have a problem with "dirty festival kids"? :smirk:

No, in fact I was quite dirty while attending a few fests in my younger days. I must admit though, I prefer the dirty festival females.

Those kind folk can smell the dankness of my sour dieselballs 20 tents away.
