The only "real" rastas I've ever known where the musicians from The Ark Band. They called them dreads :shrug:

It is a personal thing for most people. Locks are a part of some peoples spirituality and the term dread is used to imply lack of care and general dirtiness whether a negative conotation was intended.  You don't have to agree as the terms are interchangeable,  the choice is with the person saying and/or locking their hair.

I think dreads refers to growing up in poverty and dread in the literal sense of the word.

i have never heard anyone just call them locks.
