Grow Room Setup w/ pics & polls
    #20417083 -

Hey there Shroomery.

I just got the basics of my grow room setup.  This is strictly a medicinal/edible/novelty grow.

I just wanted to start a grow thread.  The pic below is the setup today.  I just finished installing the 1.5mil floor poly, i double layered it for extra strength.  It's `12' by 12' grow space with a decent sized closet.

Edit: pic working.

In the back corner is my electric pressure cooker.  Twas the only kind i use since stove tops would require a portable range and that would really increase fire hazard.

Let me know what y'all think.  I will post more after i eat some breakfast with friends.
Species to grow are as follows:
Maitake, Shiitake, Luminescent Panellus, Portebello, King Stropharia, Pearl Oyster (fruiting outside), Reishi.

Thanks!

I got the picture to work.  here is a panorama of the room showing most of the equipment i purchased already.

Pictured:  Electric Pressure Cooker,  Metal shelves for fruiting, desk for inoculating/cloning, HEPA filter rated for 144sqft room, Disinfectant air spray, disinfectant surface spray, rubbing alcohol, spring water, wall calendar, clip board for notes, and 12 bags of Rye substrate from Out-Grow.

Not Pictured:  Surgical masks, nitrile gloves, Rubbing alcohol pads, butane torch lighter, SAB (in the process of making), various clear tote boxes, fine verm, coarse verm, perlite, Coco-coir, Gypsum, 250 Sterile surgical steel scalpel blades, Micropore tape.

On the way in the mail: Petri dishes, PDA agar dry mix, Various edible/medicinal/novelty cultures (should be delivered on friday!!!)

There may be some other supplies i'm forgetting to add here but i think that's all of them.
My plan is to inoculate the Rye bags with LC (Live cultures from vendors, not homemade liquid cultures), then spawn the wood lover species to a supplemented sawdust substrate, and the other species to a straw substrate.  I've been reading GGMM and other texts on growing edible/gourmet mushrooms.

This is a learning process for me and i'm not doing this commercially or for any kind of monetary gain.  That being said, i would rather NOT waste money or time so ANY and ALL input is greatly appreciated.  This is my first edible grow so don't hesitate to correct me if i'm doing something stupid.

I hope you can all enjoy watching this grow unfold and hopefully some readers will learn something as well.

If you don't want to waste money, it's best to not go with LC. As a first time grower, there are many points where you will ask yourself what's fucked up. You don't want to have an unknown like LC in that equation. You got agar on the way anyways, I'd just start with that. Though if you have LC's from a good vendor coming, you could try that. Just squirt some on an agar dish to keep it going on AGAR at the same time.

Also with strain, you should probably do oyster, or out of those, probably reishi. Shiitake takes a long time. SRA (King Stropharia) needs to be done outdoors, maitake is really hard from what I have seen, portobello is really hard and is not a woodlover, and I don't know anything about the panellus so that one might be easy to fruit?

Good luck, and prepare the need for a large pressure cooker! (You can run them in your kitchen, doesn't have to be in the lab)

Thanks for the advice, it really helps :takingnotes:.  I forgot to ad pearl oyster to the poll list. i am not making Liquid Cultures myself.  I simply purchased Live Cultures from reputable vendors.  The cultures i bought are not "slants" but are culture syringes.

Oyster can't be fruited indoors without health risks and/or serious ventilation, so i was just going to colonize indoors, and hopefully the temp will be lowering outside enough with high RH so i can fruit them outside in the fall.  I live in the south of the USA.

I have seen people here have good success with Reishi fruited in Monotubs so i was thinking of going that route.  I thought King Stropharia just needed a bacterial layer to fruit?  I read you can use a casing layer of a soil type and that would work...

A good PC is definitely on my "wish list" as this electric one was one i have had since college graduation. I also want a decent food dehydrator, and maybe a FH.  I really want to get into agar and i am thinking about cloning some specimens in the SAB for practice tomorrow when my PDA and petri dishes get here :dancer:

I also heard Maitake is really hard but DAMN is that mushroom tasty.  In GGMM Stamets says that Shiitake can be grown pretty fast indoors, but who knows!
Mycology is full of surprises!
Thanks for the input.

i just finished installing a "Vent Filter" on the A/C vent that enters the grow room.  It is sealed to the vent & Floor Poly.  This should prevent dog hair and dust particles from entering the room from other parts of the house.  I'm PC'ing 2 1-quart Rye bags for 90 min @ 15 psi.  They were pre-sterilized from out-grow but i was just testing the PC and capacity for future reference when/if i start making my own rye bags.

A question for those experienced Agar users:

What are your opinions of PDA vs (light)MEA?

There is a lot of literature but most of what i can find only compares those when using Psychedelic mushroom species.
Thanks!

edit:  Forgot to mention i have sawdust, wood chips, and straw coming my way soon. Just have to get Rye bran to supplement the sawdust.

I would go back and forth between both kinds.  Either is fine, but changing it up occasionally will help keep cultures going strong.

Maitake isn't impossible, you just have to make sure you have a fruiting strain (theSporeDepot one is) and give it a pretty long incubation time.  Unfortunately it was the middle of winter and my humidifier died so I didn't make it much past the pin stage, but it was pretty.

Good luck with your growing!  Reishi monotubs are fun and easy, so that might be a cool one to start with.

Thanks forrester.

Here's a pic of the surgical blades i have.  150 of each kind.

I'm starting to regret using Sporeworks for edible cultures.  The ones i got from them today were labeled from a pretty old date, and they gave me a duplicate.  Hopefully the ones from out-grow will be better.

If this is a commercial operation you really can't expect cultures from vendors to be top notch.  I've found oysters and hericium to be the only ones that are decent enough fruiters

Thanks Drake for the heads up.
From my OP:  "This is a learning process for me and i'm not doing this commercially or for any kind of monetary gain.  That being said, i would rather NOT waste money or time so ANY and ALL input is greatly appreciated."

How do you suggest i get edible cultures of good fruiters?

Today i inoculated 10 Rye bags, 5 Shiitake, 3 Panellus, 2 Pearl Oyster.

I used this basic SAB.  I didn't really do anything to it.  Just sat it open side down hanging slightly off the table.  Used iso and lysol to disinfect the inside.  Inoculated the Rye bags inside the SAB.

Panellus stipticus is a fickle fruiter, I have never gotten an intentional pin from it. I like to grow it on grain though. Good luck with your attempts.

Reishi when grown to maturity will also release a significant amount of spores. But there is always the option of growing antlers instead of conks if you wish to forgo the massive spore dump.

Pan stip will fruit if you give it the better part of a year.  I think you should have no trouble if money is not the motive.  You might want a flow hood next.

I've seen people fruiting it in Mono tubs, so i thought the Polyfil would help contain the spores within the tub... idk, maybe i'll just grow antlers instead.  Thanks for the heads up!

If you're growing it in a monotub with polyfill you'll probably get mostly antlers anyway, depending on how you do the holes.  If you do get conks w/spores I believe the polyfill keeps most of them contained.  They've never seemed to cause me any problems anyway

Are monotubs not suitable for Conks?  Too little FAE?  My Reishi cultures aren't getting here until a week from now so i have some time to prepare a better fruiting situation if need be.

You can get conks in monotubs but you may need to get them a bit more FAE than a standard mono.  Bigger holes, more holes, however you wanna do it.  I take off the lid and cover the top with painter's plastic with x's cut in it, then turn the tub on it's side.

That gives it enough air? With mine I took the top clean off and spray it often. I place the top back on when I go to sleep. I got pores but they aren't really progressing much, I feel they dry out a bit too much during the day. Maybe I will do the plastic thing.

Yeah I just cut lots of x's and it seems to be sufficient.  I don't have holes in the tub, that's one of the reasons I put it on the side so CO2 doesn't pool and can easily be exchanged with fresh air.  Seems to work well enough, and even holds enough moisture in the winter when our air is really dry.

Sounds good  I noticed yours didn't have holes so I never cut any. Guess I wasn't paying attention about the rest. Thanks!
