He said it's pretty unlikely, not impossible.

There we go again with the failure to understand what words like "lucky" and "unlikely" mean. I'm sure a lot more than 47 people in the health care industry got a stick from a needle within that year.

unlikely... tell that to the 5000+ healthcare workers becoming infected each
year via a needle prick. was it unlikely that they'll prick themselves or
unlikely that they'd become infected if they did. let's say it's unlikely
for the latter since only about .05% of the needle pricks in healthcare
result in an infection. how many of those needles that didnt infect were
due to the fact that the person they were treating wasnt infected with
anything. consider that there's a million of these occupational pricks
each year, how many people were infected with hepatitis or HIV out of
those million. was it 5000? 50,000? 500,000?

if you're treating someone that isnt infected then it's unlikely that
you'll contract ebola, HIV or hep b from a needle prick, if they are
infected dont you greatly increase your risks of infection?

An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure. It's not too late to firebomb west Africa, throw a tarp over half the continent, and walk away casually whistling.

The point, is that mistakes can be made.

I don't know the specifics of the building or individual laboratory, but I have been on the campus numerous times, and many of the basic research buildings have no security once you enter the main campus.

I spent several months on the emory campuses doing work, building their
preforming arts center and repairs in other buildings including the
hospital. there's magnetic locks on multiple doors I didnt have access to
but areas I was accessing some of the security required an escort with an
ID badge and a door code. swipe the badge, enter the code, this was to
enter and exit the area we were working. not someplace that the average
student or visitor will have access to.

you're referring to a level 4 quarantine center, access will be via a
couple of armed guards when you show ID, that will allow you access to the
man trap, once inside you under the code, use the card and will probably
have some biometric scanner to verify identity, once past the mantrap you
have reasonable access to most areas but other areas will have more
restrictions, such as the room for quarantine, this room will have another
code and probably a card scanner in addition to an armed guard

good luck on getting in and out, let us know how it goes

That's all very impressive.  I don't give a fuck.  Why is this virus being imported by humans over an ocean it could never traverse by itself?

Indeed. Despite what the conspiracy theorist, wannabe shaman neckbeards believe, American healthcare is top notch, and infection prevention is taken very seriously. I've worked in hospitals, and have witnessed this first hand. Those that believe our government wants to intentionally infect the population with Ebola are nuts. I have plenty of issues with our government, but there's no way that they're going to let a wildcard virus loose in the population. That's absurd. The people pay their fucking bills. Big money groups that bankroll the politicians? They get their money by making it off the people. Killing off tons would be counterproductive.

Do we have a magical cure for ebola I didn't know about?

There is no cure, you know that. What we have here is top medical professionals & equipment.....the ability to treat the patients better, while simultaneously learning more about the virus. Moreover, while the patients are quarantined, their family members will be able to visit, seeing them through panes of reinforced glass. So if they do pass, at least they can say goodbye.

When all of this blows over without any catastrophes, I'm bumping this thread with :haha:

Yes, except the NIH probably wasn't operating at BSL-4 level.  Another example of how mistakes can be made, where security isn't what it ought to be.

Ebola isnt just another disease, it is very contagious, VERY lethal and there is no cure. Its a superbug.

Ebola is very lethal, but it isn't terribly contagious. Unlike many viral diseases, it is only contagious when the person is symptomatic and requires very intimate contact - Direct bodily contact with bodily fluids. so it is easy to avoid.
