Fractals

Fractals! Are they not amazing I ask thee?
You may answer yes, they have bought into my life much forfilment, or you may feel like I do. Please feel like I do!
Everyone else seems to know, apart from me. All i know is these fractals are somehow against me, and they are everywhere, plotting... against me.
I downloaded fractal generators to gain some insight into their working, this helped little and I later realised I had "generated" even more of them.
I was in the supermarket last week and i heard someone whisper "we like fractals, why don't you?" I span around to see who had uttered such words but all to be seen was a row corned beef. I had my suspicions on one particular tin on the bottom shelf, but that soon left my attention as I noticed a 2 for the price of 1 offer on cuppa soups.
Anyway, my point being, what the hell is all this fractal business?

i love fractals, sometimes people layer them and shit and make some awesome colored fractals, mmm, great trip toy as well just a collection of fractals, i saw a website with a guy selling home wallpaper of fractals, imagine that tripping, a huge wall of fractal.

I dig fractals as well
I love the idea of zooming in on something and just finding more and more and more and more stuff.....
I started animating fractals last year, but stopped after a computer crash totally fucked up my progress - I could go on, but I've lost the motivation for animated fractals until I can come up with an easier method for creating them.. Anyway, here's the first animated fractal I made:

you people add to my paranoia!
What is the origin of fractals? Are they found in nature?
and why do they usualy have those big black blobs and the fractal pattern things round the outside?

There is some complex mathmatical equation to them, I never quite understood. An interesting fact though, lightning strike victims usually have complex fractal patterns appear on their skin for several hours.

A simple example is to look at a shoreline on a map. It doesn't matter if you look at it from space, from a plane, or from a few feet away, the general pattern of the shoreline is the same. This is the basic idea behind fractals.

in general, fractals are graphical representations of funky mathematical equations. just like a line is a represeentation of the equation y=mx+b, where m and b are constants. fractal equations are more complex, though, and the pretty pictures are the rresult of graphing different colors for the different spaces created by using different constants (i think). what's really cool about them, is out of this intricate shape, you can zoom in and see smaller versions of the original shape hidden inside. they are also exceedingly beautiful.
also, fractal equations are the best way modern thinkers have come up with for predicting pattens with zillions of variables. examples: coastlines, branching patterns on trees, weather.

Fractals are illustrating a point in chaos theory. From very simple (mathematicly speaking) systems you get something wich is (seemingly) infintely complex.
You repeat a process over and over again when generating a fractal, and you end up with an image that's self similar (if you zoom in on a Mandelbrot fractal, you will see copies of the black mandelbrot set everywhere). A very easy fractal, which you can draw yourself, is Kochs coastline. You start out with a figure like this:
_/\_
and then on every straigt line, you add a scaled down version of the same figure. Keep on adding scaled down versions of the same figure infinitely many times, and you'll end up with what looks like a coastline like this:
Mandelbrot came up with the name fractal, which comes from the fact that fractals are fractional dimensional. The Koch coastline is 1.2 something dimensional (and not 2 dimensional, even if it looks like it).

Ever since I learned about fractals in math class, I thought they were just graphs of equations with imaginary numbers in them. Is this right, or is there any way to make fractals out of equations just using real numbers?

Here's the idea behind a fractal..
see how the bottom one is one lump, then the next one up (light blue) has two lumps, then the next one up (green) has four, and so on...

The equations are actually very simple.. the mandelbrot fractal is made with the equation f = z^2 + c , where c is a constant.
z is a point in the complex plane (which is 2d like the computer screen), for every point on the screen you apply the equation, and then you take that result and put it into the equation again and again.. the mandelbrot set (the black figure in the middle) is just where you end up with a fixed number after some steps, if you don't end up with a fixed number, it will go to infinity.. then you set the color according to how fast it goes to infinity..
a program to plot a mandelbrot fractal could be like ten lines long, so it's quite easy to do.
It's nice to show creationists who say things like 'something this complex can't come from something this simple'.. simple recipies create very complex patters, just like in nature. Fractal zoomers are great while shrooming.. awesome visuals
