Football (soccer) seems to be growing in America

As an Australian, I'm envious of how football seems to be getting more popular in America. Every time I flick on to Major League Soccer the stadiums seem more full than the last time. Football, being the most popular ball game in the world, it doesn't surprise me America probably wants to dominate. I think in 30 years or so, the US will win a World Cup. Australia though seems to have gone backwards in quality of international players since 2006.

soccer will never be big in the US

so many people are fake and just act like they like soccer during the world cup so they can be like cool and shit

its a womens sport, its a sport americans cant respect, it will never be as big as hockey, basketball, football or even baseball

i do not respect sports where diving is accepted and a lot of american sport fans are the same way, thats why we watch real football and hockey. its actually for men

As new generations are born I just feel like football will be more popular every where. People that view it as bad because it doesn't involve as much violence will get fewer and fewer.

its not even that it doesnt involve violence, plenty of americans like baseball

its moreso the fact that diving is accepted and they get slapped on the hand and fall down like theyre dead then 2 minutes later theyre back in the game. its a fucking disgrace. this is why soccer will never be a thing in the US

it makes them look like women and last time i checked nobody watches womens sports in america unless theyre in lingerie

i work at a venue where a MLS team plays and i guarantee you taht the majority of the people there are only there bc its a cheap day out with your family at an NFL stadium, maybe 10% of the people there actually care about the team. its mostly parents just tying to show their kids a fun day out and bc its cheaper than an NFL game, by a LOT

I think part of his disdain is he really doesn't know what it means to be a man. He probably compares every man to He-Man or T.V. and Movie Characters such Terminator or Steven Segal.

I think it is a combo of having a large enough population to sustain our own sportculture and being separate from a large percentage of countries.

its a women sports with rules that make no sense

in the world cup the americans went 1-2-1 and we acted like it was some sort of accomplishment lol

its a sport where goals count more than wins. if you scored 10 goals in a round robin game and still lost all the other games, theres still a chance you can advance. goals are the tie breaker instead of head to head matchup. thats fucking stupid

they add on time at the end of the game and only one person knows when the game is actually gonna end. just stop the fucking clock. soccer is just stupid

plus its for fairies and women. real men play real sports

its funny how like every kid in america plays soccer when theyre 6 and then never play again cuz they realize how bad it sucks and that other sports are so much more fun

the rest of the world is only good at soccer cuz its the only "sport" they can afford

The sports you speak of are mostly variations of what our junior school girls play.
Hockey? jolly hockey sticks= girls sport.
Basketball, another junior school girls sport, we call it netball, difference being they throw the ball to each other, without all that bothersome bouncing.
Baseball. Another girls sport we call it rounders.
Football (American) is rugby for pussy's. I recall watching a cross code American football/rugby (don't recall whether it was league or union) where they played each others game. The rugby team won both matches. Never saw this experiment repeated as the Americans new the athleticism of the rugby players would fuck them up.

Soccer has a long way to go in America.  The journey is just beginning and the fan base isn't quite there yet.  Give it time and it will command its own fan base like every other major sport.

Oh man this thread is great.

With every World Cup soccer gets more and more popular. I don't foresee it taking over any of the big four sports any time soon, but it can certainly work its way up. I also believe Kaka said European players are becoming increasingly more interested in playing here which would help the popularity of the sport immensely if the teams can come up with the money to throw at the players.

Unfortunately for Bassfreak, hockey will likely be the first one it surpasses if it ever does.

plus in 10 years hockey will be more popular than baseball. baseball is quickly declining, its just too fucking boring

hockey is on the up swing. if espn just got an nhl contract it would make NHL more popular than baseball in less than 5 years
