i use em because 1/2 are way too small they shrink some. plus i had one fat ass cake (1 pint,eq,on brnrice and verm) i cut it lengh wise twice so i had 4 wedges with rounded bottoms. then slice it like a carrot thin though. and i cased it on 1/2 inch verm on bottom, then the cake, and cased with jiffy-mix. it went 1 wedge per little foil 3"x3 1/2x6" bread bakin pan. and the extra was spread out . dogg them bitties flushed 3 time smaller size but hundreds and hundreds.1. use more subtrate just still keep a 1/4 in verm seal. i still use 1 cc per hole x4 2. dont fill half way why? if you pc em then you only need 45 mins but if you boil go with the water 3/4 a way up the jar for 1 solid hour at a slow bubbling roll. pc is way better. it seems i had to be way more sterile when making the jars up when i was boiling them to avoid contams. i just throw em together and pc now no problems. but i asked a question if it was possible to over cook b/c i just had to throw out some over cooked no growing cakes. i hope u understand me im baked early mornin

I use 1 pint jars, they just take longer to colonize, and you need a terrarium that is a little taller.------------------ see me here: www.geocities.com/vorpal_rd/justapic.html

Thanks for the help. I am mostly concerned about the time it takes to colonize. That extented amout of time could cause contamnation, which also bothers me. I read some older posts that mentioned dry cakes and premature fruiting as well. Larger jars are also harder to sterelize. I really don't feel like spending tons of money to ship jars by mail (the shipping usally costs more than the jars themselves). The only pressure cookers around here are the expensive super-large ones. I'll have to save up for those. The cheap ones seem to be plain home canners, which is just a wierd shaped pot with a rack for holding jars, and doesn't seem worth the money if you have a good pot with a heavy top. The reason I think a half full jar is ok is that it would have the same characteristsic of a half pint. That is, it could be strelized by boiling easily, and won't take forever to colonize. The substrate recipe would be the same.

I use jars from 1/4 pint right up to a quart. For the larger jars I use 1/2" of verm in the bottom as well as the top. It helps to prevent excess water from pooling and causing contams. My buddies last batch was 1 quarts of B+ that were innoculated 5/14. 12 jars, 0 contams and he birthed the last one last saturday. Something like 23 days.------------------ Be sure to check out www.3mshrooms.homestead.com for your spore needs
