Those that actually owned slaves or killed Indians should of course pay reparations to those who actually were slaves or who were actually killed.

Other than that, years of special programs are enough.

I'm not talking about slavery

I'm talking about racist policies against living people

Our government owes, so we as a society owe. That includes me

Your ignorance is obvious already

What makes you think you have any idea what should happen, or that I care what you think?

You're demonstrably wrong

So pay your share. I never owned, killed or abused any minority or even a non-minority. Too the best of my knowledge, none of my ancestors did either.

So don't include me in your guilt.

You keep talking about how wrong everyone is while consistently avoiding demonstrating how demonstrably wrong they are.
That's weird.

I gave you links, you're more than capable of checking them if you don't believe me

What else would you like?

There are demonstrable harms against natives and african americans. Do you disagree? I'm not expecting you to prove a negative, but saying "it doesn't matter" isn't much of a denial.

Or asking me a question without providing any evidence to the contrary. As far as I'm concerned this should all be common knowledge.

No one has refuted anything I've said, most of these guys have no idea what the fuck they're even talking about. Including you it would seem, if you're questioning what i've said.

It doesn't matter if it's common knowledge or not. Collective punishment is not what we do.

I didn't do the things your getting all wound up over. Attempting to make me pay, while laughable, is ridiculous.

Taxing people to pay reparations is not "collective punishment"

I'm not sure how reparations would break down, what burden would be on the states, what burden would be on the feds, which is why it's hard to do.

How much they should be compensated, and where the money should come from are complicated questions. The fact that they're owed isn't complicated or refutable.

Of course it is. Taking from one (or many) to settle what you perceive as the injustice of another, is exactly that.

It's unlikely to happen and it shouldn't.

But most of all I just wish that Americans would recognize the horrific tragedy that occurred as a result of the founding of this nation. I wish that we as a people could realize the horrors that were perpetrated and feel the shame that a nation should feel when it does something so terrible (just as Germany should feel shame for what it perpetrated upon the Jews).

Realizing that what happened to them was wrong does not equate to people that had no part in it paying reparations.

Quote:
Instead of shrugging off what happened and saying tough shit can we not feel the dishonor of such a tragedy and can't we lend our hearts out to those few who have survived, who still to this day suffer so that we could build the nation we now live within? These people paid the ultimate sacrifice, they sacrificed their lives, their families, their culture, their land, and their history so that this country could be what it is and yet they are given no thanks, they are given no honor, they are given no respect.

so do volunteer work or donate to charities geared towards them Just do it with your own money and not the money of those that aren't responsible.

Quote:
It's yet another disgraceful act of a country that continues to fall deeper and deeper into disgrace and if we don't start recognizing our mistakes and feeling the shame that we should feel it is only a matter of time that we shall descend into a chaos analogous the Roman Empire and be overthrown by some other nation of barbarians.

What's disgraceful is expecting people to pay for the transgressions of others.

Well, that and your hyperbole.

At no time did I say anyone should pay restitution. I said that such an act would not ever be able to make up for what happened. Now I did suggest that the Federal Government cede over more land to the tribes, which I believe is completely reasonable.

I'm uncertain how you could have read what I wrote and misunderstood so greatly.

I think you may be letting your emotions override you reasonable commonsense.

I'm not asking for anyone to pay for anything. I'm just asking for respect. Just as I would hope you respect the veterans who serve this country I would ask you respect those countless lives lost and destroyed for this country in the past as well. Can't you understand that?

So giving them land and the admittance fees from parks isn't something you'd consider restitution?  Imagine that!

Quote:
That said I still think the tribes should be granted MUCH more land (perhaps just give them all the national parks; I think that would be a good start and give them a way to earn a living via tourism via entrance fees etc.; because as I've said most tribes hold the record for the highest poverty rates in America)

If we gave the Indians all the national parks, half the country's territory would be comprised of casinos by the end of the decade
