Vertical hood (non laminar)
    #20217355 -

So recently I've had an idea.

First, do vertical hoods have laminar flow?

It seems that laminar flow wouldn't be nearly as important in a vertical hood (not sealed) because you're working more with positive pressure and gravity helps a tad.

Most vertical hoods leave a small opening at the bottom to work through and usually a door to load all your goodies in. Depending on the output of your fan and the size of your workspace opening, positive pressure could be quite high.

If this were the case, much cheaper filters and fans could be utilized with decent effectiveness.

Thoughts?

Yes.

If you're using a box anyway I would just use it as a still air box. They're very effective yet very cheap and easy to make.

While I do agree with the SAB route, and I will always keep mine for certain things, I have a lot of nasties in my area.

And the minimal amount of materials having to be loaded in beforehand every single time you load the box becomes quite tiresome.

I know that horizontal hoods are better for our purposes but for the novice who doesn't want to drop 350 on a hood, would a cheap merv 13 filter, vertical flow, and high positive pressure not suffice for most work until the grower decided they were ready for the larger investment?

Read quite a few relevant threads lately where fastfred among a TC not so much advocate, but agree that non laminar vertical flow suffice quite well.

For mycology, you'd be better off with a laminar flow hood on a table, blowing directly back at you.  Downdraft hoods tend to knock contaminants from your arms and hands into the work area.

Even if you have tons of trich in the air, just use a SAB if you cannot afford a proper flow hood.

The search engine here is your friend.  Vertical hoods are not appropriate for mycology.

Thanks PF for coming through with a redundant quote. I know for our uses a horizontal hood is preferred.

RR, I read through all the threads I could find on vertical hoods before posting. What I found is a mix of people that use them successfully and people that say build a laminar horizontal hood.

I'm more interested in a vertical hood for positive pressure and non laminar use.

Positive pressure is not better than still air, so I'm not sure what good it would do you.

Build it if you like, but you have our opinions.

With enough positive pressure you could close to eliminate any eddy's.

Still not better than still air.....

You'd still need a hepa filter or you're just blowing contaminants into your work and to use a hepa you need a blower. There's really no way around it.

Well they do make 1" merv 16 filters which in all likelyhood could be used.

Hepa is the standard, ranking from merv 17-20 but is that the minimum that can be used with any level of success?

If so, what to the claims of those that have basically run a box fan and furnace type "hepa" with relative success?

Bear in mind furnaces that can use those kind of filters can do so because they use blowers. You're not going to get any air to flow through a high efficiency filter with a box fan. It requires a certain amount of pressure to force the air through it. The air from a fan would just be deflected.

Well OP if your dead set on a vertical hood,

As silly as it sounds,

Why don't you just dismount the laminar flow component from it's vertical support frame, turn it on its side & make the base sturdy, build 4 walls around it, and use it singularly as a horizontal hood? It's less work than building a hood sure

After all it does contain the hepa and blower if working order. Vertical is no good, but you can turn it to horizontal easily

Because I'm speaking of non laminar flow, merely working under post filter positive pressure.

I think you would have better luck pulling air through a hepa filter with a box fan rather than push air through.

I would definitely research the air pressure needed for air flow through the filter. And id still be worried if your using one of those 1 or 2" hepa filters... They aren't really made to catch "everything"

Ghatti, what exactly are your concerns about using a SAB? It seems kind of silly to choose the more expensive option and then try to cut corners because it's too expensive. There are many way design a SAB. It seems that people who dislike them and feel they hinder their work usually do so because they're using a crappy design.

I know you mentioned the hassle of loading jars into them, some people literally just place the box over the jars on a table, no loading at all.
