millet questions
    #2018061 - 10/17/03 03:43 PM (13 years, 1 month ago)

just tried my first millet inoc about a week ago. sterilized it in a pc and all that.

1. after sterilization, should the millet be noticably moist??

2. how long does it take before one sees action??(its been 8 days)

3. i'm guessing green tint in spots is mold (only one jar)

i did the 6T tek but did not soak for that long (was only about 1 hr.) i added water before sterilization to 2 of 4 jars in two different increments to find a good balance.

lil help.........

1. It should look moist and shakable.
2. You should have seen action by now. Keep and eye on em for the next few days and if nothing happens, im pretty sure that millet is done for.
3. The green, is infact mold. Throw that shit away.

Soaking for 1hr will do no good. At least soak for 12, and allow the endospores to germinate so they can be killed in the sterilization process.

what sort of filter did you use on the jars?

the ways to fail with grain:

1. improper formulation.
2. improper sterilization.
3. improper filter construction.
4. improper inoculation.

it was one of those.

i'd be inclined to point at your soaking time....only 1 hour.
i soak for 24 hours and drain thoroughly and this has worked fine for me.

ps. i inoculate my grain jars in a glovebox using the mycelium left behind in pf jars after birthing, not an orthodox method but it works for me.

here's my wbs (which is 80% millet) tek:

1.  soak wbs for 18-24h. rinse really well until runoff water is clear. most of the sunflower seeds i allow to float away - or i use a brand without any in. sure, some say they can add lignin, but they are also often the source of contams.
2. bring to a boil, and simmer 10 mins or so, all the while watching the grains. as soon as i see a popped kernel, heat off, add cold water, and rinse well again until clear.
3. load it into a pillowcase, hang it over the sink with a corner downmost and leave it 4 hours or so to drain . every so often i move the grains through the pillowcase - usually encourages a few more drops out. when no drips at all, it's ready.
4. load into jars, about 40% of the way up. sometimes add a pinch of gypsum at this stage. cover with piece of tyvek and lid with 2 holes (one 1/2 inch, one needle sized). piece of foil on top of this. pc at 15psi for 80-90 mins. here's that lid:

5. when still really hot, jars given a shake to equalise moisture. then allowed to cool properly (8 hours plus). they should now be about 60% full.
6. at inoculation - foil off (underneath, the lid outer surface is sterile - that's why the foil was used). squirt 3-4ml into tiny hole, piercing tyvek and aiming it all around. tape injection hole before a second shake. leave in warm dark place. and hopefully, if the shroom gods are smiling, 5-7 days later....
- which can now be reshaken and hopefully later
7. (very important) self-congratulatory grinning is mandatory.

the eagle-eyed will spot that those bottom two jars are actually poly-filled, but the contents' appearance should be similar. hope this helped someone. sk

thanks a million yall.

seems the concensus is the lack of soaking time.

lesson #1: don't cut corners!!!

so after the pc stage, the millet should be visibly moist, but not clumped up, correct? and when its shaken, the millet should sound dry.....

thanks again

correct, except it shouldn't sound too dry. experiment a little, as each brand of seed is different, and may have been stored for a long time.

try a jar with 10ml water added, and one with 20ml, etc. choose the one that makes it nice and moist, but no spare water at the bottom.

yeah, its been about 20hrs of it soaking, and the millet has taken on a noticable amount of water. much more than could be at the 1hr mark.
