Can straw be pasteurized, dried, then rewetted & used later?

If I were to pasteurize a bunch of straw and then dry it out under a fan and bag it up, could it be soaked in sterile water and used a few months, weeks or days later without repasteurizing?

Doesn't sound feasible to me but give it a go though. I use unorthodox methods often and have been pleasantly surprised by the outcome on occasions

If we were talkng about exposing sterile substrate I's agree, but pasteurized straw still has a considerable amount of life left in it. I don't think fanning would add that much to it.

It would probably still only stay sterile for two weeks since the pasteurazation is like a two week hold on contams and many microorganisms are still present.

Taken from the mushroom information section at the shroomery regarding bulk substrates: How long will pasteurized bulk substrate last if I don?t inoculate it right away? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- By pasteurizing many bacteria and some molds still survive in the substrate. If you leave the pasteurized substrate uninoculated, it will "spoil" eventually. The basic principle of spawning bulk substrate is the same regardless of the type of mushroom or substrate. COLONIZATION MUST PROCEED AS RAPIDLY AS POSSIBLE TO PREVENT OTHER ORGANISMS FROM BECOMING ESTABLISHED. Once the mushroom mycelium becomes dominant, natural antibiotics secreted into the substrate inhibit competitors. So, it's best not to store pasteurized substrate more than a few days, if at all.

Wouldn't that still apply even if you dried the straw out. What about the opportunity for endospores to develop?

I say no. I would think that after you dry it and bagged it for storing, that all kinds of "bad" spores would get all over the straw, then when you rewet it, those spores will grow. There MIGHT be a chance that if you used it a day or two after pasteurizing/drying that it could work, but as for storing for a few weeks or months then I have to say no. Then again we'd never have made it this far without experimentation.

Drying the straw will not remove the bacteria. After pastuerization there are still numerous microorganisms in the straw. They will not thrive because it is wet, but they will remain present. After rewetting they will germinate very quickly as opposed to directly after pastuerization where they have about two weeks before bloom and hopefully by that time the mycelium network will have taken over.

When you make noodles wet, you generally eat them. Not dry them out and rewet them weeks later.
