straw and dung question
    #1616383 - 06/07/03 12:15 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

hello all i'm new here. everytime i mix straw and dung, it smells like mulch. wtf? i pasteurized some hydrated dung/straw/verm in the oven together, it smelled like mulch right out of the oven, spawned it with colonized palenque WBS, nothing happened. so i see this mulch smell as a problem. if i mix the dung and straw together DRY, it smells good, like real earthy.
its the combination thats doing it, i think, because i used the same batch of dung, mixed with verm and PR brf and it spawned up nice. you guys got any suggestions for this shit?
ii'm soaking some straw in dung water, it smells like mulch. maybe i should use the colonized WBS to spawn some dung/verm, then spawn that to straight straw. i just thought i could soak the straw in dung water first without having this smell, which seems to be causing problems  :frown:

i thought it was normal too, thats why i spawned it.
butif it was normal, then it would have started to colonize. i took the straw/dung/verm out of the oven, let it cool in the glovebox, spawned with colonized palenque wbs, in the glovebox, and nothing but a strong mulch smell 4 days later, and the colonized grains on top look like they are dieing, not spreading.

Its those sour rotten smells you need to watch out for when you get bacteria. I have yet to get a contamination that smells like mulch. Ususally I think my dung smells like dirt with a hint of baked potatoes. Straw smells like, well, straw. Almost wet grass like, but not really. It smells like wet straw simply.

Originally you stated that it smelled like mulch strait out of the oven. This is not adequate time for any contaminants to take over the mix. Perhaps you are worrying too much. Or perhaps your pasteurization times/temperatures are not correct. Or maybe you got a bad batch of straw.

If your not having luck with the straw you have now, you should look into composting it. It takes a few different ingredients, but from what I have read and heard, homegrown compost is the way to go. Or perhaps you could just dump the straw idea altogether, and just use dung/vermiculite, as you already had success with that route. I say to hell with the straw if its causing you problems, but I personally wouldnt give up that easily.

Edit:
Perhaps try a test run with just plain straw. That may help you single out if it is the problem.
