Reishi?
    #1988125 - 10/07/03 08:14 PM (20 years, 6 months ago)

Found a ton of these today along with a sulfer shelf.  I'm pretty sure it is reishi but my mom wants me to get confirmation.  :smirk:
I know IDs should be in the Hunting forum, but these kinds of posts tend to get buried in that forum.

Looks like Ganoderma lucidium to me.
Was it fruiting on wood?

You can dry them on the lowest setting in the oven, then use a spice grinder or mortar and pestle to grind them to dust and capsulate them.
Recommended dose is 2 capsules 2 times per day.

Reishi has amazing medicinal properties, your mom might taek some after she reads this.

Funny thing is, I'm sick. I went hunting yesterday afternoon with my dog for a joke in the local park. I came back with a pound and a half of sulfer shelf and at least twice as much reishi. I drank a cup of tea from the fresh fruit last night. I think I feel better already. Surely my nose is not dripping as much. Now for the real business. How can I clone this beast? I do not think I could get inside the fruit without cutting it.

probibly my best recomendation is to crack into one of the trees that you found it on in an inconspicuous place on the tree, preferably near where a fruitbody was. either that, or you should take a spore sample and do your agar work with that... the polypores are generally prolific spore producers.

I also just did ac quick search and found quite a few places that sell reishi spores commercially, and I know that one of the major vendors (not a shroomery sponsor) that has gone straight (ie no psyclocibes) sells spawn bags of the stuff. mushroompeople sells petri dishes, but they are overpriced, along with shipping issues with sending a live petri... uhhmmm... I'm kindof in a hurry so i will leave the rest of the searching to you, but if your interested in going about it in a simpler way than trying to clone yours, there are options.

PS: sory if mentioning a non sponsor vendor is not cool.... but it didn't exactly get rave reviews and, yeah.

I cloned stem tissue and tissue from the conk itself. On peroxidated MYA. Should see results soon.

Oh yea of course. And I am always interested in trading cultures.

I have wild oyster and this reishi. But the hunting season is in near full swing so I am always finding new specimens.

does reishi produce psychoactive effects or is it just like a supplement to keep you healthy?

well, the smart manuver would be to BREAK the mushroom apart and then use a sterile innoculation loop to take out a small sliver.. but in the case of reishi, you would have to go with a sterile knife i think. the point is that you don't want a knife that touches the outside of the mushroom touching your strile clone tissue.

If it was on a dead coniferous tree, its hemlock varnish shelf(Ganoderma tsugae). If its on a hardwood, its a reishi(Ganoderma lucidum)Both are great medicinals.
