A few questions for an expert
    #2005332 - 10/13/03 03:18 PM (13 years, 1 month ago)

My pressure cooker is way too small.  Is it ok to pressure cook jars a week ahead of time?  I can only fit one in my PC so it blows.  Id leave the tinfoil on until innoc to keep contams out.  Maybe I could store them in a lysol layden box.  I have a few jars that are over a week old sitting in my incubator and show no signs of contams, but no myc growth either.  :frown: Atleast the others are coming along nicely.

When doing a grain to grain transer, is it ok to just plop in a big chunk of colonized grain?  I dont have to break it up all nice with the lid open, do I?  Id like to keep the amount of time the jars are open to a minimun ofcourse.  Ive never grown so I dont know what the consistency of WBS cakes is and if it would break up and distribute evenly simply by shaking.

How do I know when my jars are Completly colonized?  I dont want to try and do a g2g transfer only to find that the inerds of the cakes are still composed of bird seed.

When do you stop shaking?

1. your pressure cooker may not go up to 15 PSI. read the owner's manual and shit. make sure it does. alot of the smaller ones don't. usually the smaller PC's only go to 10 PSI while the bigger ones are adjustable for 5, 10, 0r 15. check.

2. you will need a glovebox or flowhood to do G2G transfers.

3. the whole thing usually colonizes pretty evenly.

4. i shake as soon as they come out of the PC, i shake after inoculation, and i shake after a little colonization has taken place.

Not true speaking from my own experience. I get away with grain to grain transfers and also agar work without lysol, gloveboxes or flowhoods !

That's just asking for trouble though, you've just had good luck.

The manual says it goes up to 15 PSI. Can I sterilize jars ahead of time, a few days before I need them?

I plan on doing my g2g transfers on my oven rak via captains oven tek. Hes had jars open for a half an hour with 0 contams so I should be fine...right? All tools used would be flame/alcohol sanitized. Hands would be dipped in alcohol. Id fill the air with oust and a bleach/water mixture and wipe everything down with lysol ofcourse.

yes you can sterilize jars ahead of time with no probs. once it is sterile it will stay that way for a good amount of time. i have pced a couple of days ahead of time and had no probs from it. although it is most likely better to shoot them up as sooner rather than later, but a few days and you should be fine.

good luck

Cool jumpship.  It'll be nice to have jars ready to go.  Hopefully no contams get a foothold in my jars while theyre waiting.  But I guess since Im innoculating with live mycelium instead of spores that will reduce the amount of time the nasties have to get going.

Complete colonization probably isnt as important when spawning as opposed to fruiting?  When would you say is the least amount of time before I should think of doing grain to grain transfers?  Its been about a week and Ive shaken 3 times.  The WBS is covered in growth and is solid, I suppose now I just wait until they fill in.  How much longer?  I contribute the fast growth to the use of an incubator.

I suggest all newbs skip the pf tek and jump right into grains.   Invest in a PC and incubator, youll thank yourself.

i am not sure how your jars look, but do wait for them to completely colonize before spawning, g2g, casing, whatever. no reason to leave it open to contams. it should be ready soon as that liquid myc to grains go fast.

best of luck to you.
