Small brown mushroom in Houston...ID help
    #1998342 - 10/10/03 08:10 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

Hello all...I found this little mushroom on the lawn this afternoon and I cant ID it...I looked thru my "Texas Mushrooms" book and cant seem to ID...here are some pics

a) These were found in the lawn next to some trees and some landscaping...the weather in Houston has been very wet lately
b) The gills are dark brown and they are not attched to the stem
c) cap is tan at top and tapers off to a dark brown and is the size of a dime (1cm)...the stalk is light brown, very thin, and about 8-10 cm long and is fiberous and hollow it appears
d) sporeprint is a deep brown to black
e) no bruising
f) regular fresh mushroom scent

just curious...I want to sharpen my ID skills and this is a good one to start with...thanks for the input.

Panaeolina foenisecci most likely.
black sporeprint would be a panaeolus, but if youre finding its not a perfect gloss black and a biit brown then its not a panaeolus.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.
