Yeah. According to those life-long studies from Harvard, a thriving social life is one of the keys of well-being as we age. Lose that inter-personal connection and I think we're gonna regret it.

Social critic Morris Berman feels we have lost this type of inter-personal connection in a big way.  He posits two poles on the cultural spectrum of social interaction:  secular and tribal.  The secular emphasizes a strong focus on and reverence for the individual --  individual rights and the values placed on them above all else.  The tribal, on the other hand, represents extreme social connectedness -- the group above all else, very much at the expense of the individual continuum.  Berman feels modern western, and especially American, society has drifted too far in the secular direction.  Alienation, loneliness, despair, and depressive feelings mark this trend.  While he definitely does not advocate a transformation into a completely tribal-minded society -- which he feels would be an even worse development -- he thinks, and I agree, that we need more of a balance between the emphasis on the individual and one of more inclusive social connectedness and community.  He points out that this is a cultural phenomenon, and affects everybody.  In his opinion the malaise that is so prevalent today can only be ameliorated by a shift toward a somewhat more "tribal"-minded society, which would preserve a significant emphasis on the individual but would include much more social cohesiveness.

I just listened to an interesting bit about language in regards to tribalism by an evolutionary biologist. He posits that languages around the world are so diverse because they were what created the first in-groups and out-groups. The first tribal distinctions. And that having a distinct language helped to safeguard secrets, ideas, technologies, etc. It allowed an advantage for the in-group to be communicated with others in the in-group without giving it away to the out-group.

He pointed to papua new guinea and it's roughly 800-1000 distinct languages as an example of a trend. The more densely packed early tribal people were, the more languages that emerged.

And yet here we are in the modern age with English becoming a dominant world language. And population density has increased significantly. How, now, are we developing in-group and out-groups? How, now, are we keeping our in-group secrets? After listening to this guy talk, I wonder if this isn't an important question to ask. Maybe we are so seclusive because we don't know who we can trust. And maybe part of that trust issue is that there is no guarantee that someone who speaks your language is actually in your in-group. They could just as well be out to get you as to help you. There is no easy tell anymore.

Food for thought I guess.

That's a fascinating idea.  I have often wondered how such small places geographically can have so many dialects or even, as you mention, totally distinct languages.  That would explain it very nicely.

It is also, as you point out, a particularly interesting framework in which to understand some of the social issues.  If there is no in-group identity, how do we orient ourselves?

And so began the rise of sub-cultures...

I think that technology is good for getting in touch with people to meet them. And be more comfortable with people that you haven't met yet, but plan to.
But that's all that it's good for. It can't replace real intimacy, emotions and all that which happens when close to someone.
Everything in moderation.

I live in Hawaii. Technology brings me closer to people. This place would be mighty lonely without social media.

I get this - I live in New Zealand, the nearest city of 100,000+ people is over 400km away. Were it not for the internet I'd probably be out worrying sheep tonight.
