I think it's because it pushes the envelope. We are totally desensitized to the old "taboos". Anal sex is just a new one.
People are turned on by things viewed at forbidden or dirty or what have you.

not to say that anal sex is a new thing. people have been doing butt stuff for a long long time..I'm not sure how prevalent it was among heterosexual couples and  definitely seen as deviant by a number of religions, but still would be oddly interested to know.

I think it's a popular category because for most guys it is off limits with their women. I think the girls and guys that try it the first time do so because everyone makes a big deal about it being so taboo, yet so many people do it, and they are curious as to why there is such a disparity in opinion. What makes them try it again and again after that is how fantastic it feels. I only received it once but it definitely gave me a greater appreciation for the woman's perspective. But when you are the one being fucked, being the submissive one gives sex a whole new flavor and that is kind of exciting! But I would choose a girl over a guy any day of the week. Maybe a sexy girl with a strap on who I can dominate after she dominates me! :wink:
