Software Developer Deciphers Shredded Paper's Code

Few can forget the mounds of shredded documents that were discovered during the Enron scandal.

But Cody Ford and his new computer program may shed light on the truth behind the millions of pieces of paper left behind. Ford created ChurchStreet Technology and a software program that might reveal the secrets looming behind the shredded mess.

"The thing that clicked was when I saw all of Enron's shreds being carried out of the building, I realized that as a software developer, there had to be a faster way to reconstruct them," Ford said.

Ford said the company has worked on individual projects -- usually papers accidentally shredded -- as well as fortune 500 companies' paper conundrums.

The process is rather simple -- the shreds are taped together and then scanned into a computer where the software creates a puzzle of strips that fit each page. The only thing left is to connect the strips as if it were a puzzle.

ChurchStreet will unveil a program next month that does the same thing with crosscut shreds -- piecing together confetti-size pieces.

"It is not language specific. It looks entirely at the graphic element of the paper," Ford said.

Ford said he sees his idea as more than just a way to prosecute corporate moguls.

"If you have a powerful tool ... then it can help people all over the globe find information out about their past, information about a historical wrong-doing," Ford said.

Lisa Moellering, an archivist for the Holocaust Museum of Houston, knows what getting physical proof can mean to getting history right.

"Memories and people's recollections are not always so evident. It is just nice to have a piece of paper, a document that you can look at," Ford said.

From post-Cold War discoveries to those being made now in Iraq (news - web sites), bags of paper may hold answers for those who survive.

"We first realized there was a need for the technology when we discovered that a Lithuanian museum had bags of shreds from the Cold War," Ford Said. "We can go in and find the information from these shreds quickly and easily, and uncover a lot of untruths."

ChurchStreet has also offered its services to the German government, free of charge, to help reconstruct 54 million damaged documents left by the Secret Police after the Cold War.

The same offer has been made to the U.S. government in regard to documents found in Iraqi embassies.

ChurchStreet is creating a version that will be offered to the intelligence community for use with classified material.

The program is currently not offered to the public.
