Without dessicant there is only one other non-destructive way to get cracker dry. That is using free-on..the refrigerator coolant. I think it may be illegal though because it has CFC's. So..its not environmentally safe anyways.
Dessicant can be bought at walmart in many cases. I found it in automotive as an ice-melter. It's called "Driveway Heat" by prestone. Its in a clear plastic jug thing. It looks like bright white styrofoam balls. They also might sell it in the cleaning section as a different product. Using a fan will only dry the mushrooms to a certain point.

Are you sure about the free-on? I've never heard of using free-on before. I'm not doubting you, just questioning. Maybe you meant "freeze dried" like using dry ice to dry your fruits.

Well i just re-read the freon thing in grow/find under preserving..and it wasnt what i had thought..I read it a very long time ago and obvoisly didnt read very closely. sorry to spread the mis-info.

fan dried is sufficient if you don't live in a very humid area.

here's my method. 24 hours under the fan, then stick in a tupperware container with silica gel. By the time the shrooms are finished with the fan, they are almost completely dry. Do not skip the fan drying, the dessicant can't get rid of the moisture fast enough and they will most likely rot. You can cut the large shrooms in half for faster drying. If you can't find damp-rid(i couldnt) then go to an arts and crafts or flower store and ask for silica gel(its used for drying flowers). The fan should be good enough until you get your dessicant. good luck

I left some fat guys in my drying chamber then went on vacation. On my return, they had started to rot! So I quickly set up a fan and tried to air dry them. To my utter surprise, in 24 hours, they went totally dry... dry enough to snap when bent (they dried quick enough so that I think the soggy shrooms are still good to eat). The fan dry method kicks ass.

I will now always fan dry first, then move to a drying chamber for the final bit of moisture.
