A lot of MB members are just poor Egyptians.  The Egyptian government has never provided a sound environment for the average Egyptian to do business. The military govt has always thrown miles of bureaucratic red tape in front of anyone trying to do business who does not belong to one of the elite families.  It has worked like that in Egypt for decades: it could take a decade to get a basic permit to be a vendor; it is practically impossible to get a start-up loan; and if a govt official has a grievance with you, you will be taken off the street instantly.  The bureaucracy and insecurity of having to do business without govt sanction is the real cause of the Tahrir uprising, and similar practices are the cause of all the Arab spring protests.  The MB for years has provided economic support to people who the govt has abandoned.  I find their philosophy repugnant, and of course many of them are engaged in violent extremism.  But I am looking through the eyes of an outsider, not an impoverished, uneducated Egyptian.  Many, many MB affiliates are normal people who have nowhere else to turn for succor.  That's been my experience with MB members I've met personally, and most experts seem to agree that is how the MB has been successful as an organization.

What makes you think the poor Egyptian peasants aren't rabid religious zealots themselves?

No doubt many of them are.  Many are ambivalent.  Frankly, I don't blame uneducated, oppressed, and destitute people for the irrational beliefs they hold.  Many relatively well-educated and wealthy people here in the U.S. are complete religious nutjobs.  A few of the MB members I've met said they're not especially religious, but they need the support they get from the MB.  Some members joined the mainstream Tahrir movement and abandoned the MB as well.  They had been looking for a third option between a repressive government and an overbearing, intimidating opposition.  Unfortunately, as you correctly said, no coherent third option coalesced.  The military is too unflinchlingly violent, and the Brotherhood too entrenched in poor rural areas, for a strong third party to emerge.

I don't see the Egyptian military as any more violent than the MB.

Both are violent.  I would argue the military govt is indeed and always has been more violent, and importantly more violent against average noncombatant citizens, though the MB definitely has plenty of blood on its hands.  The important distinction is that the military was in power for decades, and imposed crippling restrictions on businesses, levied high taxes on the already destitute, drove people off their land, denied small businesses the legal right to operate, and on and on (without even getting into political repression).  The MB has often been a benign force in the lives of those same people, the ones most marginalized by the military govt.  It is not a benign force per se, but it has been effective in taking advantage of the very real needs of average people to grow its base.
