Shroomy guy and his "real world" counterpart
    #19729564 -

Imagine a computer character. Lets call him shroomy guy. He lives in a 3 dimensional computer world. As this character's learning matures he starts to notice something strange about his environment. For instance he notices that he can not break objects in space infinitely. Computers store information as binary numbers. As a result the coordinate system in the 3d game will be composed of extremely but not infinitely small intervals. His world will be loaded with minimum sizes, minimum times, and minimum speeds.

Like our universe has the Planck length our digital dweller will discover that objects and time itself will appear to tick by. Shroomy guy discovers that if he stands at the right part of the map and faces the right direction some objects which are directly in his gaze simply disappear. And just like his universe there are aspects of our universe that are downright magical. For example after collecting a certain number of points the gamer buys himself a resurrection or an extra life. The damage caused by multiple gunshots and be completely and instantly healed by finding a first aid kit. After finding the first aid kit the kit will simply disappear and the player will be instantly healed.

Now lets examine the gamer himself. In order to interact with the game's universe and thereby derive pleasure from the game he must first have an interface such as keyboards or controller. He must have an individual location assigned to him so that he can store the information on where he is located and the angle he is looking, what gear is there and so forth. A binary of numbers is thus changed into an environment akin to our own that is displayed on the screen. Now that our gamer has an identity and location within the game world he can now interact with shroomy guy.

But what if the gamer enters the computer world not with the intention of having fun but with the intention of revealing to shroomy guy the nature of his reality. Imagine telling shroomy guy that his entire universe is stored on a rotating disc called a hard drive. Imagine telling shroomy guy that objects whose characteristics are recorded on sectors on the other side of the hard drive may be sitting right next to him. Imagine telling shroomy guy that in order for him to experience you in your true fleshly form you would have to put your finger on the rotating hard disc thereby destroying his universe. Imagine explaining to him that his world is weightless because the hard drive weighs the same whether the universe he lives in is empty or loaded with objects and characters. Imagine banishing the growing notion in his mind that his world has a single random number but instead numbers that appear random, and that his universe isn't even capable of randomness.

Poor shroomy guy. It seems so permanent, so real. His world included a depth that no flat rotating disc could ever mimic, or so he thought. Objects that are far were far and proved by being inaccessible without travel. Objects that were close were close and proved it by accessible without travel. In his universe some objects were heavy and proved it by being hard or impossible to move. Other objects he knew to be light and proved it to be by being moved with ease. And as for those random numbers, nothing but the computers on-board clock spitting out an endless stream of numbers that are predictable to infinity.

Shroomy guy's story is a good vehicle to imagine two universes whose distances and times have no correlation and whose beings share different kinds of flesh. The story of shroomy guy is significant because you are shroomy guy. We live in a computer. We are on the inside looking out.

the matrix has you, take the red pill

the only insane person is the person who thinks he knows something, he thinks he knows the whole universe, but everything he thinks might be wrong

do we need to know the whole universe?
or do we need to know ourselves?

Were I offered the red pill I'd eat it.

That's what amuses me about scientists. They are so certain that physical laws and mathmatics describe our universe. But they take as much on faith as any religious. That is, they presume that the reality they observe actually exists.

Descartes said it best, "Cogito ergo sum" or "I think therefore I am". Beyond that one self evident observation everything else requires certain presumptions. I am told that a circle has 360 degrees, well that is presuming that there is a circle. And I don't take that or any other observation for granted.

Indeed

I don't like the science idea that we must know the whole universe and find a theory of everything
we will never know it all, thinking we know it all is the biggest illusion

expect nothing to reach the other side ;-P

it's funny, it is possible to live so much with your brain that you forget you have a body lol
hadn't seen my body in 10-15 years before I did psychedelics, only my brain
was like waking up in a dead body, very unpleasant, it was almost dead, had eaten junkfood everyday for 10 years and gained 50% weight or so, had most illnesses only 70yr olds have

but I used to like the scientific verification method ;-) , even atheist at some time
although agnostic most of the time, think that makes more sense

atheist rejects viewpoints, agnostic doesn't

but no need for labels anymore, screw being agnostic :-)

some of my friends used to be anti-religious (atheistic) agnostic, that is just mental masturbation lol
title for everything

the matrix is our thoughts, they don't want to let go, they want more

That's an interesting perspective. It's similar to the "brain in a fishtank" theory that people seem to have.

My problem with this perspective is that, well, does it really matter whether something is "real" or "virtually induced?" What's the difference? Why is one more significant than the other?

For instance, right now I'm sitting on a chair as I type this. Is this chair actually here? Is this chair merely generated by a brain that's floating in a fish tank? Is this chair stored in a hard drive? But whatever its true origin, it doesn't change my perspective of the chair. The chair is here for me to sit my ass down on, that's all there is to it.

The power of consciousness is that you can choose to assign whatever value you like to whatever object/experience. I could argue that an LSD experience is "just" a temporary distortion in neural communication. But the actual perceived, "felt" experience of this distortion can go a long way and provide my life with meaning, wonder, awe, and astonishment, all of which can have value. Whether this entire Universe is real or virtual doesn't matter, rather my perception of it does, because my perception creates my reality.

I know you know better than that.  RP = OP = RP = Rogue Pixie (if memory serves correct)
