Eminem is a lightning rod; of course you're going to have all the nerd ass hipster haters who think that anybody who goes mainstream is a sellout -- you fucking morons, that's the point. Every one of those whack ass underground obscure nobodies you all rep dream to make it big. Eminem was once an underground rapper, too. They're not staying at the bottom because they want to, they're staying there because they have no fucking choice.

Now that said, am I personally big on Em's new stuff? I'm just not as into it anymore, when he got onto the scene (particularly the MM LP), I mean that was some of the rawest, most uninhibited shit I've ever heard put down. Bar none. But I think he has gotten bored with it and often goes through the motions now, although he still hits on verses every few tracks where he just absolutely fucking murders it. Skills wise today, he's still as sharp and talented as any rapper out there. It lacks something however. The hunger and rawness aren't there anymore. You could hear the anger and pure emotion in his voice throughout that entire MM LP, now he just kinda tries to emulate that IMO (but with much less effect). Once you make it THAT big that primal hunger to make it just naturally kinda evaporates I guess. Still a handful of tracks on that new album that I like, though. But yeah for the most part I'm bored with him now because for my money his absolute peak came in 2002 with that Marshall Mathers LP.

But ask any legendary rapper today however and Em will be in his all-time top ten, and really in any debate of top ten rappers EVER anywhere, he'll be somewhere on that list.

Nas
Pre-Douche Bag Kanye West
Wu-Tang Clan
Eyedea
Aceyalone
Guru
Aesop Rock
Mr. Lif
El-P
Murs
Slug
Del tha Funky Homosapien
Illogic
Brother Ali
Cage
Common
MF Doom
Talib Kweli
Mos Def
NWA
Jay-Z (earlier in his career)

And that is just off the top of my head.

Only idiots hate Eminem for being popular.
Much better to hate him for utterly lacking substance and having only the slightest technical proficiency at his trade.

And Cojo: Kanye is still a fantastic producer, even he is mostly insufferable and a mediocre rapper.
But good list. for Eyedea, Del, and Slug.  Atmosphere was always a favorite of mine.

top 5 my ass,

hes been a top name, if not on top entirely of the game, for like 20 years now.... he easily is a contender for #1.

he ran shit all the way through 8 mile, yall must be forgetting this.

honorable mentions for 'other' top rappers are :

tupac, biggie, rakim, big L, KRS-one, nas, Jay-z, drake(idc what anyone says, you wouldnt be able to make his pussy voice work like he does, which is why he is right now on top), method man (& with wu-tang), and kendrick lamar is already resonating with me nowadays to boot...

Lil Wayne has been a top name, that doesn't have anything to do with being the best.
Mainstream rappers will never surpass what the underground has done and is doing right now, you're just blinded by and all the hype he gets.

The first 6 you named are all above eminem

I have to say, I have listened to a lot of MF Doom, Wu-Tang Clan, NWA, Jay-Z, Aesop Rock and Common, and none of them seem as good to me as Eminem. Del is definitely at the top of the game but he only has a few tracks I think are genius, the rest of them seem kind of shitty to me.

He's not a sellout because he made it big and got rich, which is great.  He's a sellout because he stopped making good music and made dozens and dozens of God awful, mailed-in tracks and appearances in other people's stuff, and a couple of lazy CD's.  That's the definition of a sellout: making shitty music with zero effort to collect paychecks.

I don't think every legendary rapper would put Eminem on their top 10 list.  I remember BET used to have rappers host their own music video shows and count down their all-time greatest lists, and Eminem was in a couple of them but definitely not all of them.  This was well after his peak.  He was a legendary battle rapper and freestyler, and his word play definitely had a big influence on a lot of the genre's style.  But he was only ever put in the all-time great discussion because of his appeal to young white hip hop fans.  They made him rich and famous.

any fear at all, for whenever I will—
and I will have the will, strengthened
as I’ll be with contemplation and study—
at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

eminem has good delivery, utterly wasted.

That rap god song is probably the best thing i've heard from him in 10 years except he sounds like he's losing his voice.

Cunninlynguists,  R.A. The Rugged Man, Atmosphere, Stig of the Dump, and Dr. Syntax are just a few artists who ate definitely better than Eminem. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy Eminem, but he's not the best.

No argument here. These days the substance is pretty much gone.

Fair enough. He did get lazy and has been going through the motions for years now.

Being white helped a great deal, no question about it, but at the end of the day white or black or fucking purple, the dude has ripped shit on the mic that most rappers could only dream of. And this is coming from somebody who used to hate the shit out of Eminem. But ultimately he proved to me that regardless of color he has at times displayed rare skill in the booth. In his prime is what I'm referring to.

well, yeah. it's just an opinion and those aren't normally worth much.

for that song in particular i think it sounded great. i like a lot music. genre isn't as big of a factor as talent is for me. i think Eminem is pretty decent.

In terms of both substance and delivery, I still think the entire list blows Eminem out of the water. But we can agree to disagree.
