"the evolutionary psychology behind politics"...

http://www.amazon.com/The-Evolutionary-Psychology-Behind-Politics/dp/0982947933

this book has been making quite a splash lately.. and i must admit it is a very compelling and formidable work...i have no doubt that many liberals will be spun around by it..as i nearly was...

however..a little googling quickly reveals that "anonymous conservative" has grossly misrepresented r/K selection..which is the crux of his argument...to wit..r-selection develops in a dangerous environment where no amount of investment in an offspring will increase its chances of survival (hence the need to have as many as possible).. while K-selection occurs in a more stable environment where an increased investment in an offspring will make it more viable...AC has almost flipped these around..and he re-emphasizes this falsification in nearly every paragraph...

but if you overlook that tiny little detail (and most readers will)..then it makes perfect sense.. and thats what makes this book so dangerous ..the bigger the lie..the more ppl will believe it the more you repeat it...that should sound vaguely familiar...

This is making a splash with who exactly? Complete bumpkins?

Nothing about this book is intelligent. r/K selection isn't about psychology it is about biology. The twisting of the neuroscience is pretty epic as well. Sure, they mention that liberals have poorer amygdala function. This means that liberals will often be unable to perceive threats. Conservatives on the other hand will often perceive threats where none exist. People in the middle have a better grasp of threat detection than either partisans. They conveniently forget to mention that liberals have better DLPFC/ACC function and are better at sorting out conflicting information. This is why liberals have beliefs with much higher integrative complexity than individuals of other ideologies. This is good when you want to think for yourself. Unfortunately, a group that thinks for itself will always be crushed at the hands of a well coordinated group obediently taking orders from a leader.

Altemeyer pretty much put the last word in on political evolutionary psychology in his study of authoritarianism. Groups without authoritarians don't last very long. They are vital to the preservation of the group. They can easily be identified by looking for people with strong in group loyalties (religion, sports, patriotism, etc.) Well, at very least, he figured out liberals and conservatives. Libertarians have yet to be nailed down from an evolutionary psychology perspective. Tricky bastards. I'm sure the fact that most libertarians are affluent white males born into middle-class+ families should provide some hints as to what is going on.

DLPFC/ACC :wtf:...

of course the book is bullshit.. but its "truthy"..and thats what makes it dangerous...many if not most readers will simply take the truthiness at face value and not bother to do that tiny bit of extra research that debunks it...

truthiness is in turn based on the concept of a frame.. which is impervious to the facts once it has been established...

it might also be worth pointing out that conservative policies have created the conditions that favour (the real kind of) r-selection...

There, I corrected that part of your post for you.

That whole paragraph was so much horseshit that it stunk up the whole forum.
The key is, a good leader adopts an authoritarian mindset when the situation calls for it.  At other times he is operating in a different mode--coach, mentor, friend etc.

The world is full of examples of authoritarians who are complete failures because they aren't leaders.

You seem to be brainwashed in the belief that people need Big Daddy control freak looking over them to ensure their survival.  They don't.  They need someone with leadership skills, which is what the US has been sorely lacking in the assclowns the people vote in as president.

You are half right Starfire. Authoritarians require leaders (people high on the SDO and RWA scales). Authoritarians (people high on the RWA) would just dick around and keep to themselves in the absence of a leader. With a leader they conquer and defend the group very efficiently. A group of liberals couldn't last in the real world because they'd get their asses kicked and lunch money taken by whatever authoritarian group happened upon them.

This is all well documented by experiments. In fact, everything I have posted has a corresponding experiment. Look no farther than the wiki for political orientation and biology / Altemeyer's the authoritarians. If anything typed here looked like speculation that, frankly, is ignorance on your part. Peruse the sources and you will see.

For the record, Starfire, I'm not "brainwashed". I am simply using evolution and empirical studies to account for the existence of authoritarians. They are aggravating, seemingly idiotic wastes of space if you see only the surface. But evolution has its reasons, and they are in part what I have outlined. Any group in the past that didn't have authoritarians has been eliminated, hence why only groups with strong authoritarian presences remain.

This looks like a good book.  The comments are worth reading, too.

Yes it does look like a good book, if the authors replies in the comment section are any indication of what the book is like, it could be well written science fiction.
