Any other way to starile my straw than on stove?
    #1923207 -

Any other way to starile my straw than on stove, because I have no thermometer to get 170 in the pot. Can I do the same stuff but put the pot in the oven on 170? can i nuke it?

dude! if you're looking for an easy way out may i suggest you not use straw? it needs to be pasturized properly. there are methods like hippie's tek where you use hydrated lime and/or bleach solutions in addition to pasturization but i wouldn't suggest relying on those alone. if you have absolutely no way to get to a stove, then you can use sterno heat or maybe even a lot of candles to get a *small* amount of water up to 160 (like a large coffee can size......)

Auto Clavs are the best , but expensive !
PS Why can't you get a thermometer ?
Use your flesh then ... if blistering of skin happens in 10 seconds or less ... you are above 160*F keep at this temp for 45 mins , and whala pasturised straw !
Do not get so ugly to folks for not understanding your odd problem , it will get you nowhere in the shroomery .
Good Luck

if you do not have a store in any reasonable distance then go to your neighbour and say you are cooking and need to borrow a thermometer
if you do not have a neighbour in any reasonable distance then go outside
you are in the woods, there is probably some growing there

Holy crap, if your not willing to do things right don't bother.  You were told straw needs to be properly pasteurized to use, you can't properly pasteurize without a thermometer.  So you have two choices: 1. get a cab to the store to buy a thermometer  2. don't use straw.  Don't wate your fucking time if you're not going to do it right!  :smirk:

yes. or boil a big ass pot of water, leave it 5-10 minutes then put the bag of straw in and leave it to cool down. better than nothing if you want to try.

:wink:or you could get a thermometer. a candy-t is good. you got one?
