say a friend didn't have a thermometer, and he wanted to pasturize straw in a pot on a stove, what would be a good position for the knob? thanks

On?

Seriously though, find something, cheese maybe?, that melts at around the same temp as you want to achieve. Put it in a little tiny bowl and float it while slowly bringing up the temp.

Every stove is different. You have to be pretty acurate with pasturizing. It is hard to do without a thermometer. Get one. They're only like 3 bucks at wally world.

Errr.. well since every stove is different there is no answer.. but somewhere between low and med probably. Just set on a pot of water and see what position it boils. That should give you some idea.

If you have some Bromine laying around.. it boils at about 160 deg F.
