germination or a no go?
    #1920453 -

Here's a closeup of one of my friends cakes that was inoculated 3 or 4 days ago... He has them in a warm water bath and he was wondering if this is germination or water seeping in? or something else? Should he keep them going or should he try something new?
Heres another pic

Please help me out!

The isolated part is just caked brf, that happens with brf/verm all the time. The germination point will be a much more bright white. You will know it when you see it, it will be pure virgin white. (No grey)

Looks like some sort of bacterial infection to me , but I am no cake grower . Why are you keeping them in a warm bath ? This may be your trouble , try to make a better incubator , one that does not require jars to soak in water , very risky in my opinion . 3-4 days is a tad soon to excpect mycelial growth , and it will be a stark white , not gray , when it does .
Good Luck

anyone have any ideas on how I can keep a controlled temperature environment with cakes? water seemed to be the easiest and cheapest way to keep a temp of above 80* to me (its sterile btw). I just want to see some white growth I've seen two batches of cakes not work now maybe its the spores or something im doing wrong?

Keep temp of house set in acceptable range , try a fish tank heater in container with water in a large rubber maid container (not to large) . There are many ways to controll enviro enough for proper incubation temps , just do some reading on the topic and select best one for your budget , needs , space etc ...
Cosin IT likes the keep house temp in the correct range 78 - 84*F range , is broad but works fine depending on time of year . Try storing them above a fridge , above oven or stove , somewhere in your home you will find an area that will work , if not get inventive .
