Since vitamin C is water soluble you can over-dose on it without any ill effects.
However, if you are getting your vitC from multivitamins, then you need to cycle them because not all vitamins are water soluble.

Been following the following guidelines myself. I make sure to use Quali-C.

Vitamin C plays many extremely important roles within the human body. Research seems to be always finding more functions for this ‘miracle chemical’. These have been summarised by Dr. Ross Pelton in his book ‘Mind Foods and Smart Pills’: Vitamin C stimulates the immune system, enabling one to better resist diseases. Terminal cancer patients taking megadoses of vitamin C have been found to live longer. It promotes faster wound healing and reduces the amount of cholesterol in the blood. It is a powerful detoxifier and protects against the destructive power of many pollutants. In addition, it protects the body against heart disease, reduces anxiety, and is a natural antihistamine. A severe deficiency causes scurvy, and eventually death. Increasing intake has been found to increase mental alertness and brain functioning in a variety of ways. Vitamin C is the main antioxidant that circulates in the blood. When available in sufficient quantity, blood carries it around the body, washing over the cells to create a bath of protection.

Whenever a free radical turns up, a molecule of vitamin C gives up one of its own electrons to render the free radical ineffective. According to Pelton, this process may take place somewhere between 100,000 and a million times a second, depending on the body's level of metabolism and the amount of vitamin C available. Unfortunately, with each radical decimated, a molecule of vitamin C is lost, so the body rapidly loses its supply of vitamin C. Vitamin C is a key player in keeping our neural system healthy. The body has a system that operates like a kind of a pump to concentrate vitamin C around our nerves and brain tissue. These tissues have more unsaturated fats than any other organs in the body, making them more vulnerable to attack by free radicals and oxidation. The vitamin C pump removes vitamin C from the blood as it circulates to increase the amount of vitamin C in the cerebrospinal fluid by a factor of ten. The pump then takes the concentrated vitamin C from the cerebrospinal fuid, and concentrates it tenfold again in the nerve cells around the brain and spinal cord. Thus our brain and spinal cord cells are protected against free radical damage by more than a hundred times as much vitamin C as our other body cells. For such an important chemical, it is extremely odd that we are dependent on vitamin C from outside sources. But how much of it does the body need? Research carried out by the Committee on Animal Nutrition demonstrated that monkeys needed around 55 mg. of vitamin C per kilogram of body weight. When this measure is extrapolated to humans, a 150-pound person would need a daily intake of 3,850 mg. Nutritional science recommends that a human needs 45 mg. each day. This is just enough to prevent scurvy but not enough to keep the body functioning at an optimal level. We would not, and indeed do not, obtain the sort of levels our bodies really need from a diet high in meat and low in vegetables/fruit, but we would from one high in fruit, shoots and leaves. Analysis of wild plant foods eaten by primates shows that many of these foods contain notable amounts of vitamin C. The young leaves and unripe fruit of one species of wild fig was found to contain some of the highest levels ever reported. Our closest living relatives, the great apes, eat a diet that contains between 2 and 6 grams of vitamin C every day. When our ancestors were living in the forest they would have consumed similar amounts.

For allergies I found staying away from certain foods did wonders for it. I found certain foods I was not allergic to but they seemed to activate allergic reactions to things like pollen. These foods are different for everyone afaik - though there are a lot of common ones.
Vitamin C did not help me much with allergy attacks - but niacin flush certainly did help alleviate symptoms for a bit until i got my diet back on track.
What vitamin C helps me with is avoiding flu-like symptoms. I eat 1-2 grams a day in the flu seasons.
For me a megadose is 1/2 to 1 gram every half hour while awake. Works wonders if you are already sick and got a stuffy nose etc.
Ascorbic acid should not even be classed as a vitamin imo. At least I think so after I looked up the meaning of vitamin ...

Yeah I tried doing it too, to help with health issues.  I got up to 50g a day and still didn't hit bowel tolerance (to help with illness you are supposed to try and saturate yourself by hitting bowel tolerance.  The sicker you are, or the more you need it, the higher it will be. For most people it's around 15-20g).  Felt very awesome and healthy though.  Unfortunately it didn't solve all my health problems  and I had to stop for other reasons, but I definitely felt noticeably better and stronger whilst doing it.

*sigh* Okay, one more time:

Linus Pauling was a chemist, not on MD. While he was a brilliant man in the field of Chemistry, it hardly qualifies him to diagnose and treat illnesses.  Also, Dr. Pauling  died of cancer.

Now onto megadoses of Vitamin C - plainly put, do nothing to alter any illness besides Scurvy. If you take a large dose of C, You're just pissing your money away because your body will take what it needs at the moment and excrete the rest in urine.

And you know what you're talking about? Anybody can write a dismissive post such as yours. Anybody can assume that there's no benefit it exceeding the amount needed to prevent scurvy.

I'm not entirely dismissive of it. If we don't get enough, bad things happen, so it's a pretty important vitamin. But you can get all you need from what you eat and megadosing will do nothing.

But, I figured y'all would do a simple websearch. Here's one good result.

Well, I just finished "The Cyclists Training Bible" by Joe Friel, and although he advocates a whole food approach to diet, and promotes very limited used of supplements, he had a persuasive argument for supplementing both vitamin C and E.

Both are antioxidants which are able reduce oxidative stress on muscle tissue from exercise.

In order to receive the recommended daily intake of these vitamins from food sources you would have to eat something like 150 individual fruits (i'll post the list later.)

As such, he recommends athletes supplement these antioxidants.

The type of Vitamin E is important. The average vitamin E supplement has been strongly linked to decreased lifespan.
