technically, if all 26 characters are in the bible, you could get anything out of it.

It's done using the Torah (first five books of the bible I think?) in hebrew.....but yea, same logic applies.

Technically, the Bible Codes discussed are from Torah, which is only the first five books of the bible. Torah is written in Hebrew, which has more than the 26 letters that English has. The letters in Hebrew can also represent numbers or show quantity.

All of the references I have read used War and Peace as the alternate text rather than Moby Dick. The 'uncanny prophecies' found in War and Peace were pretty weak compared to the ones found in Torah. To be fair, a lot more people have spent a lot more time looking in Torah for special meaning than have looked in War and Peace.
I wrote code to do the stastical analysis that they talk about during the show back in the mid '90s. I could find the stuff they talked about in the show, but I don't know enough Hebrew to know how to search for stuff on my own. (I actually spoke the guy from Isreal that did the original statistical work back in '90. He gave a lecture about the bible codes at a nearby university, which I went to watch.)
Even after all this time I still do not know what to think. Some of the related words and themes that they have found are truely amazing. At the same time, if you search long enough in any text, are you going to find similiar anomolies?

That's how I feel about it. We human beings are always seeking meaning in everything. It's all about findings patterns. Just like when you look up at clouds and see rabbits, faces, etc. in them. When I've tripped I've seen faces in the carpet.
The Bible does indeed contain hidden meanings, but in a different form. Jesus lays it out when he tells his disciples that he hides things from the masses, but all is revealed to them. So he admits he has secret teachings. This is far more interesting to me than crunching numbers to find some supposed code.

"Sometimes a cigar is only a cigar."
Unless it is unwrapped very carefully, the tobacco removed, and it is then rolled back up after making one minor adjustment to what substance it consists of.. Peace.
