CDC: 300,000 Americans are Diagnosed With Lyme Disease Each Year

Lyme disease is about 10 times more common than previously reported, health officials said Monday.

As many as 300,000 Americans are actually diagnosed with Lyme disease each year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced.

Usually, only 20,000 to 30,000 illnesses are reported each year. For many years, CDC officials have known that many doctors don’t report every case and that the true count was probably much higher.

The new figure is the CDC’s most comprehensive attempt at a better estimate. The number comes from a survey of seven national laboratories, a national patient survey and a review of insurance information.

It's a disease carried by certain ticks, if your in the woods make sure you keep cheking yourself for ticks and youll be fine

I had it many years ago, when I was in 7th grade I believe. It happened in the fall, and I never even saw the tick. The only way I knew something was wrong, was the development of facial palsy. That shit freaked me out, got the bloodwork done & was diagnosed with Lyme's Disease. It wasn't caught til late though, and I was fucked up. My knees swelled up to 5x their normal size. I went on antibiotics, and that got rid of it. However, there are after affects. My joints received permanent damage. I'm fully functional, in good health, physically fit & quite strong. However, I get pain in my joints & tendons that acts up every so often. I have to take breaks from the gym every couple months or so. It's a pain in the ass to be honest. Probably gonna need knee replacement surgery in the next 10-20 years. Check yourselves for ticks.

I got it when I was 12... if it goes untreated (which it most likely will, if you don't develop the red bullseye pattern), it can cause joint damage, neurological damage (progressing to psychosis), cardio damage, and eventually death.

They only figured out I had it because my joints kept swelling for no reason, to the point of them having to drain my left knee and do surgery on it, and I started having ongoing panic attacks/OCD/depression/delusions and they finally tested me for it and found out that yup, my blood was swimming with spirochetes.

I'm fine now, except my joints swell a bit and get stiff whenever I exercise, and I have depersonalization disorder (life doesn't feel real, I feel detached).

But yeah... fuck Lyme disease.

A few years ago a doc told me I'd likely need it when I was around 30.  I'm 28 now... shit sucks.  But I feel you man, sounds like we had similar experiences.  My knee was so weird, you could push the kneecap way farther than it was supposed to go, like it was barely attached.

Yeah I'm 28 as well. Never got any psychological effects, but there has been weirdness with my left hear as far as feeling & hearing goes ever since as well....the same side that had the paralysis. Hopefully they can push off that knee replacement for ya. There is a lot of promising research using stem cells from healthy connective tissue -> growing them in a petri dish -> injecting them into the degenerated connective tissue, and then it heals. The US is way behind on this though, and there's lots of red tape. Some countries in europe have already approved the treatments though. That would be way better than getting your knees replaced.

Yeah, I am going to put it off as long as I can.  I just do some gentle stretches and resistance training for them to keep them in shape, try not to squat, take care how I stand up (because they pop like I'm an old man every time I stand), and hope that technology and medicine improves here in the meantime.

Plus, he said around 30... not exactly at 30, so I'm hoping that with care and a good lifestyle they'll last closer to 40 or beyond.

Ticks are terrible in Wisconsin of course. I've been paranoid all summer about Lyme's Disease because I know people who've had it and I've found ticks, no bites though. Or none that I'm aware of, hense my slight paranoia. Ticks are cruel little things. Just imagine if they could fly; we would be fucked.
